KARNATAKA TRAVEL GUIDE · UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
Solo Female Travel in Karnataka: Safety, Transport and Where to Go
A frank guide for women travelling alone in Karnataka: the numbers to save, how to move by bus, train and cab, what changed after the 2025 attack near Hampi, and how to choose places and stays.
Quick answer: is Karnataka safe for a woman travelling alone?
Yes, with judgement. Start with busy, well-served places such as Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru and Udupi, keep to daylight in rural areas, and save 112, 181 and 1363 before you leave. The risk in Karnataka, as elsewhere in India, rises with isolation and darkness rather than with the state as a whole. The most serious recent incident, in March 2025, happened at a remote lake near Hampi after dark.
No place can be called risk-free, and nobody can promise you a trouble-free trip. This guide combines official helplines, press reports of real incidents and practical judgement. Where a line is our own read of a place, it says so. We do not rank places by crime figures, because the notes below are about the choices a visitor controls: where you sleep, when you move, how you travel and who knows your plan.
If you are planning the route first, our Karnataka 5-day itinerary and best time to visit Karnataka guide will help you pick dates, and the airports guide shows where to land so you do not arrive in a small town at midnight.
Emergency numbers to save before you leave
| Number | What it is | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 112 | Single emergency number for police, fire and ambulance | Karnataka folded the older numbers (100, 101, 108) into 112 from late 2019. Launch coverage said that on some smartphones pressing the power button three times connects to the 112 control room. Test this on your phone before relying on it. |
| 181 | Women Helpline run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development | Described by the government as a 24-hour emergency and non-emergency line that links women to police, One Stop Centres, hospitals and legal services, and offers counselling. It was reported operational in 34 states and union territories in 2023. |
| 1363 or 1800-111-363 | National tourist helpline of the Ministry of Tourism | Runs 24x7 in 12 languages, including Hindi and English plus ten foreign languages, for travel information and for tourists in distress. |
| KSP app | Karnataka State Police mobile app | Police say it gives quick access to help for people travelling in isolated areas. Bengaluru police told all cabs in November 2025 to display the 112 number and KSP app details in Kannada and English. |
Official details are on the Press Information Bureau’s Women Helpline release and the Ministry of Tourism’s tourist helpline note. Helplines and apps change, so confirm them again before a long trip.
Set-up that takes ten minutes
- Save the numbers in your phone and write 112 on paper as well, in case the phone is lost or dead.
- Buy a local prepaid SIM if you are visiting from abroad. Lonely Planet notes that data is cheap and public Wi-Fi is scarce, and you will need data for rides and bookings.
- Share your plan, stay address and expected return time with one person at home, and update them when it changes.
- Carry a power bank. A dead phone is the most common way a small problem becomes a big one on a rural ghat road.
Getting around: buses, trains, cabs and autos
Buses: Shakti makes state buses free for women
Since 11 June 2023, Karnataka’s Shakti scheme has given women, and transgender persons, free travel in non-air-conditioned, non-luxury government buses within the state. At launch, any valid government photo ID served as proof of residency, with smart cards to follow. Travel across the state border is not free, and AC or luxury services need a ticket. Launch coverage did not list each bus type by name, so ask the conductor before you board an unfamiliar service. Our KSRTC bus guide covers bus types, booking and key routes. Rules and cards have been revised since 2023, so treat this as a summary and confirm locally.
Buses are cheap and frequent on main corridors, but they can be crowded. Sit near the front, keep your bag on your lap, and avoid getting off at an unlit roadside stop at night.
Trains: choose the compartment
For long overnight journeys, Lonely Planet recommends air-conditioned first class, which has lockable compartments. Trains also have ladies’ compartments, and ticket queues for women exist at many counters. For daytime rides with views, see scenic train journeys in Karnataka.
Cabs and autos
- Prefer app-booked cabs in cities and check that the number plate matches the booking. Lonely Planet advises never accepting rides from strangers.
- In Bengaluru, look for the 112 and KSP app sticker that police ordered on cabs in November 2025. A sticker does not make a driver trustworthy, but it tells you where to report one.
- Agree on the meter or the fare before you get into an auto. If the driver stops to pick up other passengers, Lonely Planet’s advice is simple: get off.
- Share the cab or auto details with your contact before you start the ride.
Arrive in daylight
Plan arrivals in small towns before dusk. If a train or bus gets in at night, book a pickup from your stay or a prepaid taxi, rather than searching for a room on arrival.
Hampi: what changed after March 2025
On the night of 6 March 2025, a group of travellers and a local homestay owner were attacked near Sanapur Lake in Koppal district, less than 30 km from Hampi, as reported by The News Minute and The South First. According to police accounts, the group was stargazing after dinner when three men on a motorcycle approached them. Two women were assaulted, and one of the male travellers was later found dead in the canal. By 10 March the state’s home minister said all three accused had been arrested.
The incident was a serious one, and it shaped how many women now plan Hampi. It does not mean every part of the area is dangerous. It does show the pattern to avoid: remote water edges, after dark, away from other people.
How to visit Hampi more carefully
- Be back at your stay by sunset. Treat Sanapur Lake, the canal banks and riverside rocks as daylight-only places.
- Do not go stargazing or night-photography outings to isolated spots. Ask your host about options that stay inside a village or compound.
- Book a stay in a populated stretch, such as Hampi Bazaar or Hosapete, and confirm the booking yourself before you travel. Hosapete is a short bus or auto ride away and has the railway station.
- Use a licensed guide arranged through your stay or the monument counters, and consider a small-group tour for the first day.
- Tell someone your return time when you go to quiet monuments such as Matanga Hill, and go at sunrise or sunset when others are there.
Our Hampi 2-day itinerary lays out the monument circuit, how to reach Hampi from Bangalore covers trains and buses, and Hampi trip cost shows the budget. Whether to go alone is your decision; if you are unsure, join a group for the monument days.
Where to go: a destination-by-destination read
The table is our editorial reading of places, not a safety rating. Conditions change by season, by crowd and by the hour.
| Place | Our read for a solo woman | Watch for | Read next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | The easiest base: airport, metro, app cabs and the widest choice of stays | Late-night rides, crowded buses at peak hours | Bengaluru places |
| Mysuru | Compact sightseeing circuit with many tourists and good bus links | Chamundi Hills only in daylight; it is a long climb | Mysore Palace guide |
| Mangaluru and Udupi | Busy temple and college towns with plentiful lodging, including temple-run rooms | Rough sea, beaches after dark | Udupi Krishna Matha · Mangaluru beaches |
| Gokarna | Popular beach town, easiest if you stay near the main street or Kudle | Isolated beach stretches after dark, strong currents | Gokarna beaches |
| Coorg and Chikkamagaluru | Homestay country; good with a confirmed pickup and a hosted stay | Remote estates, fog and ghat roads after dark | Coorg 3-day plan · Chikmagalur guide |
| Temple towns | Dharmasthala, Sringeri and Kukke Subramanya are busy and run on schedules, with dress codes | Crowds at festival peaks | Dharmasthala · Sringeri |
| Hampi | Better in a group for monuments and daylight only | See the section above | Hampi plan |
| Treks and forests | Not a solo plan: go with a registered group or guide | Weather, wildlife, no network | Kumara Parvatha · Kudremukh |
For a first solo trip, a three-day loop through Mysuru and one other base keeps transport simple, or a coastal trip from Mangaluru to Udupi suits those who prefer beaches and temples. See also weekend getaways from Bangalore for short trips.
Choosing a stay
Lonely Planet argues that paying a little more for accommodation and transport is likely to make you safer. Whether or not you spend more, check these before you pay:
- Is the property in a village, street or compound with other people around, or at the end of a long dark lane?
- Can the host arrange a pickup from the bus stand or station, and what is the last practical time to arrive?
- Do recent reviews from other women mention the host, the staff and how late the gate stays open?
- Is the room lockable from inside, and does the host give a phone number that answers?
- For homestays in the hills, will your car or a cab manage the last stretch of road in rain?
Avoid announcing at the front desk or on social media that you are alone and where you will be tonight. Lonely Planet suggests mentioning a friend or partner you are meeting, and a firm, loud ‘no’ can deter unwanted attention.
Dress, temples and beaches
Dress norms are about local expectations as well as comfort. Loose cotton or linen suits Karnataka’s climate, and a scarf or sarong is useful for covering shoulders at temples. Many temples set dress codes, which our temples guide and individual pages cover. At beaches, Lonely Planet cautions against swimwear unless you have checked that it is accepted. Use family sections in restaurants if you prefer, and keep a few phrases handy using our Kannada phrases for travellers.
Mistakes solo women make in Karnataka
- Staying out after dark at a lake, river or empty beach because it feels quiet and safe.
- Letting a driver talk you out of your booking, or accepting a lift from a stranger.
- Booking a remote estate stay with no pickup plan and no mobile signal.
- Entering the sea alone where you do not know the currents. Ask a local before you swim.
- Skipping the monsoon reality check. Ghat roads and treks change fast in rain, so read Karnataka in monsoon first.
Quick checklist
- Numbers saved: 112, 181, 1363
- Stay confirmed, with a pickup or an easy walk from transport
- Return time shared with one person
- ID in your bag for Shakti and for hotel check-in
- Cash, power bank and an offline map
Solo female travel in Karnataka: frequently asked questions
Is Karnataka safe for solo female travellers?
Many women travel alone in Karnataka without trouble, especially in cities and busy tourist towns. Risk rises in isolated places and after dark. No place is risk-free, so choose your stay and timings carefully and keep someone informed.
Is Hampi safe for a woman alone after the 2025 incident?
The March 2025 attack happened near Sanapur Lake, away from the main monuments, at night. Many visitors still go. If you do, stay in a populated area, keep to daylight, avoid remote water edges after dark and consider a group tour for the monument days.
Which emergency numbers should I save?
Save 112 for police, fire and ambulance, 181 for the Women Helpline and 1363 for the national tourist helpline. Keep them written down as well as in your phone.
Do women travel free on Karnataka buses?
Under the Shakti scheme, women get free travel in non-air-conditioned, non-luxury government buses within Karnataka, with a government photo ID. AC and luxury buses and travel outside the state need a ticket. Confirm current rules with the conductor.
What is a good first solo trip in Karnataka?
In our view, a Mysuru-based trip of two or three days is easy, with palaces, buses and plenty of tourists. The coast from Mangaluru to Udupi is another good option for temples and beaches.
Is it safe to take autos and cabs alone?
Use app-booked cabs where possible, check the plate against the booking and share the ride details. For autos, agree the fare or meter first, and get off if the driver picks up other passengers.
Can I stay alone in a homestay in Coorg or Chikkamagaluru?
Many travellers do. Choose a host with recent reviews, arrange a pickup, avoid arriving after dark and check that the lane is passable. Remote estates with no mobile signal are best avoided for a first trip.
What should I wear in Karnataka?
Loose cotton clothes that cover shoulders and knees are comfortable and suit temples. Carry a scarf, and check local norms before wearing swimwear at a beach.
