Chikmagalur Trip Guide: Itinerary, Cost and Where to Stay

A practical plan for Karnataka’s coffee country: how to reach Chikmagalur, the best months, a three-day route that does not waste mornings, what each style of trip costs for a couple, and the rules that have changed at Mullayanagiri.

3 days2 nights in the hills
240–250 kmfrom Bengaluru
1,925 mMullayanagiri summit
₹13k–₹35k+per couple, by style

Quick answer: how to plan a Chikmagalur trip

Take three days and two nights. Day 1: arrive and keep it light around the town. Day 2: Mullayanagiri at sunrise, then Baba Budangiri and a waterfall. Day 3: Kemmangundi (Z Point and Hebbe Falls), or a Bhadra safari instead, then head home. Budget roughly ₹13,000 to ₹20,500 per couple with your own car and a homestay, ₹18,500 to ₹29,500 mid-range, and ₹35,000 and up at an estate resort. These are my estimates, with the assumptions shown in the cost section.

Chikmagalur (officially Chikkamagaluru) sits at about 1,090 m in the Western Ghats, roughly 240 to 250 km from Bengaluru. The town is the base, but the best sights are spread out: Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri are to the north, Kemmangundi is 53 to 61 km away depending on the source, and the Bhadra wildlife area is on the other side. That spread is why a weekend feels rushed and three days feels right.

If you are weighing destinations, the district overview is in our Chikkamagaluru district guide, and the comparison with Coorg is at the end of our Coorg 3-day itinerary. Short on time? See where this trip sits among the weekend getaways from Bangalore.

Fees, timings and road rules in this guide come from the sources I checked in October 2026 and they differ between sources in several places. Where they disagree I show a range and tell you to confirm on the spot.

By car from Bengaluru

The usual route is NH75 through Nelamangala, Kunigal, Channarayapatna, the Hassan bypass and Belur, mostly four-lane. Car tolls on this stretch are listed at about ₹240 to ₹290 one way. The alternative runs via Tumakuru, Tiptur, Arsikere and Kadur on NH69, about the same distance but slower at around 5 hours. Because the main route passes Belur, the Chennakeshava temple is an easy stop; see our Hoysala temples guide.

By bus

KSRTC runs services from Majestic and Satellite bus stands. Published fares are about ₹330 to ₹400 for the Rajahamsa non-AC semi-sleeper, running roughly every 45 to 60 minutes, and ₹500 to ₹700 for the Airavat AC, which takes about 5 hours. Check the current timetable and fare on the KSRTC site before you go.

By train

Kadur Junction is the nearest station, about 40 km from the town. A taxi from Kadur is listed at ₹800 to ₹1,200, and buses take about 45 minutes. If your train does not stop at Kadur, Birur is the fallback, about 50 minutes from town by the district administration’s account. Train numbers and timings change, so confirm them on the railways’ enquiry site. For other rail-based trips, see scenic train journeys in Karnataka.

The district administration’s own travel page is at chikkamagaluru.nic.in.

Two sources agree that September to February is the sweet spot for Mullayanagiri and Z Point, and waterfalls such as Hebbe are listed as strongest after the monsoon, roughly June to January depending on the source. The 3-day Chikmagalur plan at a glance

Day 2North: Mullayanagiri and Baba Budan rangeMullayanagiri sunrise, Baba Budangiri, Manikyadhara or Jhari Falls6:00 am
Day 3Kemmangundi, or BhadraZ Point and Hebbe Falls, or a Bhadra safari, then home7:00 am

The driving times between stops below are my estimates unless a source is named. Mountain roads, fog and weekend traffic can double them.

Day 1: Arrive and keep the first day easy

RouteBengaluru to ChikmagalurDistance240–250 kmStart6:00 amNightChikmagalur town or an estate

Morning: the drive

Leave by 6:00 am to reach Chikmagalur around 11 am to noon with a breakfast stop. Do not plan sightseeing before check-in; many estate stays are 20 to 40 minutes off the main road down narrow lanes, and arriving in daylight matters.

Afternoon: lunch and Hirekolale Lake

Hirekolale Lake is about 10 km from town and is listed as free to visit, with a quiet shoreline that suits a slow afternoon. Ayyanakere, a larger lake near the town, is another easy stop. Neither needs more than an hour.

Evening: an estate walk

Most stays offer a plantation walk, and several include it free for stays of more than two nights. Ask what is in season rather than expecting a fixed show. If you want a museum visit, the Coffee Museum in town is listed at ₹20 to ₹50, with daytime hours; call before you go because one listing says it shuts on weekends.

Dinner is usually at your stay. Malnad thali meals at homestays are quoted at ₹250 to ₹600 per person. For the dishes to look for, see our Karnataka food guide.

Day 2: Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri and a waterfall

RouteTown, Mullayanagiri, Baba BudangiriDistance10–30 km each wayStart6:00 amNightSame stay

Sunrise: Mullayanagiri (1,925 m)

Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka. A paved road now reaches the top, and about 460 stone steps lead to a small hilltop shrine; the climb from the car park takes 20 to 30 minutes at an easy pace (my estimate). The base village for the old trekking trail, Sarpadari, is 10 to 15 km from town depending on the source.

Check the vehicle rules before you go. In July 2025 the district administration announced slot-based vehicle entry to the summit road to limit weekend traffic and landslide risk: two daily slots, 6 am to noon and 1 pm to 6 pm, a cap of 600 vehicles per slot, parking at Seethalayyanagiri, and departmental jeeps for the last stretch. Online pre-booking was planned, and entry can be suspended during red weather alerts. I could not confirm how this operates today, so ask your host the evening before and do not assume you can drive up on a weekend.

On foot: the Sarpadari trail

The traditional route starts at Sarpadari and is about 3 to 4 km to the peak, roughly a three-hour ascent through shola forest with steep early sections. There is no water on the path, so carry it from the base. The trail is slippery and misty in monsoon. Our treks in Karnataka list helps you compare it with other routes.

Late morning: Baba Budangiri

Baba Budangiri is about 25 to 30 km from town and is revered by both Hindus and Muslims. The shrine is listed as open 6 am to 6 pm with no entry fee, and photography is not allowed inside. The area is also tied to the legend of coffee reaching India. Allow one to two hours, wear shoes with grip, and expect wind and mist.

Afternoon: Manikyadhara or Jhari Falls

Manikyadhara Falls is near Baba Budangiri, and Jhari Falls is listed about 30 minutes from Mullayanagiri; both are free per the listings I checked. Water levels are lowest in summer. Do not swim at any waterfall here.

Day 3: Kemmangundi, or Bhadra for a safari

RouteTown to Kemmangundi and back, then homeDistance53–61 km each wayStart7:00 amPlan BBhadra safari instead

Option A: Kemmangundi, Z Point and Hebbe Falls

Kemmangundi is a former summer retreat of the Wodeyars, now maintained by the Karnataka Horticulture Department, at about 1,434 m. The drive from Chikmagalur is 53 to 61 km depending on the source; allow about two hours (my estimate). Raj Bhavan, the horticulture guest house inside the garden, is the starting point for both walks.

Z Point is a steep climb of about 2.5 to 3 km one way. Sources quote anything from 45 minutes to two hours each way, so start early and plan to be back before dusk. Hebbe Falls is about 8 km downhill from Raj Bhavan by trek or SUV, where water drops about 168 m in two stages, Dodda Hebbe and Chikka Hebbe. A jeep from near Raj Bhavan is listed at ₹500 to ₹600, though one source ties that fare only to the Raj Bhavan stretch, so confirm what it covers. Kallathi Falls, about 10 km from Kemmangundi, drops about 122 m. Entry to Kemmangundi is listed as free by one source and about ₹100 per person by another.

Carry water and food: there are no vendors on the Z Point trail. Camping at Z Point is not officially allowed.

Option B: Bhadra safari (Muthodi)

Bhadra Tiger Reserve’s Muthodi safari is 30 to 35 km from Chikmagalur. Slots are roughly 6 to 8:30 am and 3 to 6 pm and last 45 to 60 minutes. A listing from October 2023 gave ₹600 per person by jeep and ₹500 by bus, other sources say ₹300 to ₹500, and a news report says Bandipur, Nagarhole and Bhadra raised safari fees from 1 September 2026, so expect more. Book on the reserve’s official ticketing site (linked from bhadratigerreserve.in). Monkeys, deer and peacocks are common, elephants and gaur possible, tigers very rare. A reserve notice in March 2025 closed the main Chikmagalur–Mallandur–Muthodi road for repairs and gave 55 to 59 km alternate routes, so check the road status. More options are in our wildlife safaris guide and bird sanctuaries guide.

Heading home

Start back by about 1 pm and avoid driving the ghat roads after dark in mist.

Where to stay in Chikmagalur

ZoneBest forTypical price per night (quoted)Why pick it
Town edgeFamilies with elders, short stays₹2,000–₹4,000ATMs, shops and clinics nearby
Central hills (Mudigere–Aldur)Couples, families with children₹4,500–₹7,500Estate cottages among coffee and pepper
High country (Mullayanagiri side)Trekkers who start at dawn₹6,000–₹12,000Closest to the peak; stone cottages, lodges
Waterfall zone (Jhari, Kallathi)Quiet monsoon staysVariesFew stays; remote
Estate villasGroups₹18,000–₹45,000 per villaChefs and lawns; booked months ahead

The price bands come from one stay-booking platform’s guide, so treat them as a guide to what you will see rather than a rate card. Holidays and long weekends can add 20 to 30 per cent. Pick the zone by what you want to do: stay on the Mullayanagiri side if sunrise is the priority, and in the central hills if you want estate time and a quieter base. Kemmangundi has its own horticulture guest house, but rooms there are basic and the place gets crowded on Saturdays. For romance-focused trips, see our honeymoon places in Karnataka.

A half-day cab is quoted at about ₹2,000 and a full day at about ₹3,200 including fuel and driver, which is the realistic way to see the north and Kemmangundi without a car.

Chikmagalur trip cost for a couple

Premium estate, own car₹24,000 and up₹4,500–₹5,400₹5,000–₹8,000₹2,000–₹4,000₹35,000 and up

Assumptions (my estimates): a couple travelling three days and two nights; about 650 km of driving including local trips at 14 to 16 km per litre and ₹100 per litre; tolls of ₹240 to ₹290 each way; stay prices from the zone bands above; the bus case uses Rajahamsa fares of ₹330 to ₹400 per person each way plus one and a half to two full-day cabs at about ₹3,200 each; food at ₹1,000 to ₹2,700 per day for two. Safari and jeep costs are included in the entries column. Expect more on long weekends, and less if you skip the safari.

Bus travel does not save much, because the sights are far apart and you will pay for local cabs either way.

Mistakes that waste a Chikmagalur trip

  • Driving up Mullayanagiri without checking the slot rules. On weekends the road can be restricted or jammed; ask your host the night before.
  • Treating Chikmagalur as a one-base town. Kemmangundi is about two hours away and Bhadra 30 to 35 km; pick one per day.
  • Booking the safari last minute. One operator’s listing notes that a minimum group of about seven is needed to run a vehicle, and there are no safaris at the peak of the monsoon.
  • Packing for a hill-station summer. Winter lows reach about 11°C and the peaks are windy and wet; carry a jacket and shoes with grip.
  • Swimming at waterfalls. Currents and rock are unforgiving; stay at the viewpoints.
  • Leaving late on the last day. Fog and ghat curves make night driving tiring and slow.

Packing checklist

  • Warm layer and rain jacket for Mullayanagiri
  • Trekking shoes with grip, a reusable water bottle (carry it up the trail)
  • Original photo ID for safari entry
  • Cash for jeeps and small stalls; network can be patchy on the hills

Chikmagalur trip FAQ

Three days and two nights covers Mullayanagiri, Baba Budangiri, a waterfall and either Kemmangundi or a Bhadra safari without long drives each day. A weekend works if you drop one of the last two.

About 240 to 250 km by road, taking 4 to 5 hours by car on NH75 via Hassan and Belur. Buses are listed at about 5 to 5.5 hours.

November to February for dry, cool weather and treks, with September to October greener and wetter. January is the driest month; October is the wettest at about 163 mm.

A paved road reaches the summit, but the district administration announced slot-based vehicle entry in July 2025 with a cap of 600 vehicles per slot and parking at Seethalayyanagiri. Confirm the current rules with your stay or the district office before you go.

Between 53 and 61 km by road, depending on the source. Allow about two hours each way, my estimate, and start early.

Not fully. The falls are about 8 km downhill from Raj Bhavan at Kemmangundi, reached by trek or a jeep. Do not swim.

Listings range from about ₹300 to ₹600 per person, and Bhadra reportedly raised safari fees from 1 September 2026, so check the official booking site for the current price.

My estimate is ₹13,000 to ₹20,500 on a budget with your own car, ₹18,500 to ₹29,500 mid-range, and ₹35,000 and up at a premium estate, for three days and two nights.

Chikmagalur has higher peaks and quieter estate stays; Coorg has more sights spread across the district. Our Coorg 3-day itinerary and Chikkamagaluru district guide cover both sides.
