Quick Answer: Best Places to Visit in Koppal

The best places to visit in Koppal are Anjanadri Hill, Anegundi Fort and village, the Navabrindavana island, Pampa Sarovara, Sanapur Lake and the Hirebenakal megalithic site. Add Koppal Fort, the Ashokan edicts at Gavimath and Palkigundu, the Mahadeva Temple at Itagi and Kanakagiri if you have a second or third day. Visit between October and March, climb Anjanadri at sunrise and base yourself in Anegundi or Hampi.

Most Koppal tourist places lie on the north bank of the Tungabhadra, directly across the river from Hampi, so this guide works as a quieter companion to our Hampi (Vijayanagara) guide. The sights beyond Anegundi are spread out, so group them by direction rather than trying to see everything in one day.

Searching for places to visit in Koppal? Most visitors treat the district as the quieter side of Hampi: Anegundi, Anjanadri Hill, Pampa Sarovara and Sanapur Lake sit just across the Tungabhadra, while Koppal Fort, Kanakagiri, Itagi and Hirebenakal reward a longer stay. Hospet and Hampi are the usual bases, and boats and bridges decide which side of the river you can reach on a given day, so confirm locally.

Distances, timings and rules in this guide were cross-checked against Karnataka Tourism, UNESCO’s tentative-list entry for Hirebenakal and recent travel reports in October 2026. They change often, so confirm on the day of your visit.

10 Best Places to Visit in Koppal (With Timings and Tips)

Koppal is one of Karnataka’s newer districts, carved out of Raichur, and its best sights cluster in two places: the Anegundi side of the Tungabhadra, opposite Hampi, and the dry plains around Koppal, Gangavati and Itagi. The ten places to visit in Koppal below start with the Anegundi circuit, then move out to the heritage sites that need their own day. Each card gives the practical details that general guides often skip.

1. Anjanadri Hill

Climb: about 550 to 570 steps, roughly 45 min | Entry: free | Best time: sunrise or late afternoon

Anjanadri is the hill where tradition places the birth of Hanuman, son of Anjana, which is why he is also called Anjaneya. A white temple crowns the summit, and a zigzag trail of white-painted steps leading to it can be spotted from across Anegundi. From the top you look over the Tungabhadra, paddy fields, boulder-strewn hills and, on a clear day, the Hampi landscape. Several places in India claim to be Hanuman’s birthplace, but Anjanadri is the one set inside the Ramayana’s Kishkindha country.

Plan it: The hill is roughly 4 km from Anegundi village and about 23 km from Hampi by road. Reported temple hours are around 6 am to 6 pm, and there is no entry ticket. Karnataka Tourism advises bringing your own snacks and water. Go at sunrise for cooler air and soft light, wear shoes with grip and keep food out of sight of the monkeys. Hanuman Jayanti on Chaitra Purnima draws very large crowds.

2. Anegundi Fort and Village

Location: north bank of the Tungabhadra | Time needed: 2 to 3 hrs | Best time: morning

Anegundi is older than Hampi. It served as the 14th-century headquarters before the Vijayanagara capital took shape across the river, and local tradition links the name to elephants, from the Kannada word for the animal. The fortified village has gateways, a hilltop fort with a Durga temple and a Ganesha temple where Vijayanagara kings are said to have prayed before war, the Gagan Mahal palace and the ruined Huchappayya Matha, known for black stone pillars and panels of dancers.

Plan it: Walk it slowly, because the sights are scattered between rice fields and boulders. The village hosts the Anegundi Utsava, and the Muslim community holds a Tazia procession here during Muharram. Anegundi has also been developed as a craft and rural tourism village, so the lanes are good for meeting artisans. Start early before the rocks heat up.

3. Navabrindavana Island

Access: boat from the Anegundi side | Entry: free | Best time: morning, when the river is calm

Navabrindavana is a small island in the Tungabhadra, a little east of Anegundi, that holds the Brindavanas (sacred tombs) of nine Madhwa saints, among them Padmanabha Tirtha, a direct disciple of Madhvacharya. It is a major pilgrimage stop for devotees of Sri Raghavendra Swamy and one of the quietest spiritual sites near Hampi.

Plan it: Entry is free. For special sevas, inform the Raghavendra Mutt in Anegundi in advance. Boats run only when the water level is safe, so ask locally before you plan around it. From Hosapete, pilgrims often reach the Talarighata ferry on the Hampi side and continue to Anegundi, with the island roughly 2 km beyond. The Madhwa mathas in Anegundi have a few rooms, which fill quickly, so book ahead if you want to stay.

4. Pampa Sarovara and the Kishkindha Temples

Location: Anegundi | Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hrs | Best time: late afternoon

Anegundi is widely accepted as Kishkindha, the kingdom of the monkey king Sugriva in the Ramayana. Pampa Sarovara, the sacred lotus pond, sits at the heart of that tradition, and the Chintamani Temple and the Ranganatha Temple are the other shrines Karnataka Tourism lists nearby. Rishimukha hill, associated with the epic, rises close to the river.

Plan it: These are small, quiet sites best combined with the fort in a single walk. Dress modestly, remove footwear at shrines and go in the late afternoon when the light on the boulders is at its best.

5. Sanapur Lake

Location: near Anegundi and Hampi | Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hrs | Best time: late afternoon

Sanapur Lake is an irrigation reservoir ringed by boulder hills, and Karnataka Tourism calls it a little-known excursion point near Hampi. The drive winds through paddy and banana plantations, and a coracle ride on the water is the main activity.

Plan it: Carry cash, because coracle rides are paid on the spot and availability depends on the operators and water level. The lake is at its prettiest in the late afternoon, which makes it a natural way to end a day of climbing and temple visits. Follow the boatmen’s instructions and keep out of deep water.

6. Hirebenakal Megalithic Site

Distance: about 10 km west of Gangavati | Time needed: 2 to 3 hrs | Best time: early morning, October to February

Hirebenakal is a megalithic burial complex of the Iron Age, reported to be the largest necropolis among the 2,000 or so megalithic sites of South India. It is a centrally protected site under the Archaeological Survey of India and was submitted to UNESCO’s tentative list for World Heritage status in April 2021. The monuments include dolmens, cairns and stone circles, and rock shelters nearby carry ancient paintings. Counts of the monuments vary by source, from roughly 400 to about 1,000.

Plan it: Tentative listing is not the same as World Heritage status, so there are few facilities. Reports describe rough terrain and no clearly marked path, so go with a local guide, start early, wear closed shoes and carry water. It lies roughly 35 km from Hosapete, making it a good add-on to a Hampi stay.

7. Koppal Fort

Location: Koppal town | Time needed: 1.5 to 2 hrs | Best time: morning

Koppal Fort is regarded as one of the strongest forts in the country. It is not clear who built it, but Tipu Sultan acquired it around 1786 and strengthened it with the help of French engineers. In 1790, British forces with the help of the Nizam took it over. The fort crowns a hill above the district headquarters.

Plan it: Koppal town has the railway station and is the practical base for the sights east and west of Anegundi. Visit in the morning, wear sturdy shoes for the climb and check locally whether all sections are open.

8. Ashokan Edicts at Gavimath and Palkigundu

Location: near Koppal town | Distance between the two: about 3.5 km | Time needed: about 1 hr

Gavimath and Palkigundu are two adjacent sites in Koppal district, around 3.5 km apart, that carry inscriptions of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka. They show how far the empire’s reach extended into the south, and they pair with the better-known Maski edict in neighbouring Raichur district, which was the first to name Ashoka outright.

Plan it: These are small, open-air rock sites rather than developed attractions, so go in daylight and dry weather and ask locally for the exact approach. They suit history enthusiasts and can be combined with Koppal Fort in a half day.

9. Mahadeva Temple, Itagi

Built: 1112 CE | Time needed: 1 to 1.5 hrs | Distance: about 64 km west of Hampi

The Mahadeva Temple at Itagi in Yelburga taluk is one of the finest Western Chalukya temples. An inscription dated 1112 CE says it was built by Mahadeva, a commander under King Vikramaditya VI, and calls it Devalaya Chakravarti, the Emperor among Temples. The open hall has about sixty pillars and richly carved ceilings, the outer walls are almost plain, and a pushkarni (tank) and an open stepped well sit nearby, along with 13 small Shiva shrines.

Plan it: Kuknur, about 6 km north of Itagi, has the Mahamaya and Navalinga temples from the same era. Itagi lies in the opposite direction from Anegundi, so give it its own morning, ideally on a route towards Gadag or the Badami and Pattadakal circuit in our Bagalkot guide.

10. Kanakagiri

Famous for: Kanakachalapathi Temple | Festival: Phalguna fair (Kanakagiri Utsav) | Time needed: about 1.5 hrs

Kanakagiri is believed to be the ancient place where Kanaka Muni meditated. Karnataka Tourism notes that it is so sacred that devotees who cannot go to Tirupati can make the pilgrimage here instead. Its 600-year-old Kanakachalapathi Temple is known for an unusual Parameshwara statue, and the town also has a royal bath associated with the Nayaka ruler Venkatappa Nayaka.

Plan it: The annual Phalguna fair brings large crowds, so visit on a weekday if you prefer quiet or choose fair days for the atmosphere. Check temple timings locally, and combine Kanakagiri with Hirebenakal on the Gangavati side of the district.

Koppal Tourist Places by Interest

  • Pilgrims: Anjanadri Hill, Navabrindavana, Kanakagiri and the Kishkindha temples. Many devotees combine Anjanadri and Pampa Sarovara in a single morning.

  • Families with children: Sanapur Lake, Pampa Sarovara and the easy Anegundi village walk. The Anjanadri climb is steep, so younger children may prefer the lower viewpoint.
  • Trekkers and photographers: Anjanadri at sunrise and the boulder trails at Hirebenakal. Wear grip shoes and carry water.
  • Couples and friends: Sunset at Sanapur Lake, a coracle ride where it is operating and a slow evening in Anegundi.

Best Time to Visit Koppal (Month by Month)

The best time to visit Koppal is October to March, when temperatures are manageable for the Anjanadri climb and the Hirebenakal trek. Karnataka Tourism and Incredible India both point to this window.

PeriodConditionsBest forWatch out for
October to NovemberPleasant, green after the rains, about 19 to 34 CAnegundi walks, Sanapur LakeHigh river can stop boats to Navabrindavana

Festivals: Hanuman Jayanti at Anjanadri (Chaitra Purnima), the Anegundi Utsava, the Phalguna fair at Kanakagiri and the Muharram Tazia procession at Anegundi are the main dates. Confirm each year’s dates locally.

Koppal month by month:

  • January and February: the best months for climbs, boat rides and long walks, with cool mornings.
  • March: already warm. Start Anjanadri and Hirebenakal climbs at sunrise.
  • April and May: very hot, up to roughly 39 C. Visit only temples and viewpoints in the early morning.
  • June: hot and humid before the monsoon, with a few showers.
  • July to September: monsoon. The Tungabhadra rises and boats to Navabrindavana and the river crossings may stop, so check before you travel.
  • October and November: green fields and a full river, pleasant for Anegundi walks and Sanapur Lake.
  • December: cool and clear, excellent for every Koppal tourist place.

What to Eat and Buy in Koppal

Food in the district is simple North Karnataka fare, while Anegundi and Hampi have laid-back cafes aimed at travellers. Eateries near the villages are small, so carry cash.

  • Jolada rotti meals: sorghum flatbread with brinjal curry, a staple across North Karnataka.
  • Anegundi cafes: relaxed riverside and rooftop spots, often used by travellers staying on this side of the Tungabhadra.
  • Temple meals: several pilgrimage sites, including the mathas near Navabrindavana, serve simple meals to devotees. Ask before you go.

What to Buy: Kinhal Toys

Kinhal (Kinnal) craft, the painted wooden toys and idols of Koppal district, carries a Geographical Indication tag and dates to Vijayanagara times, when it was patronised by the kings. Fewer than 25 families are reported to practise it today, so buying directly from an artisan in Kinnal helps keep it alive. Anegundi’s craft cluster also sells handmade pieces made by local women.

Where to Stay Near Anegundi and Koppal

Pick the area that fits your plans rather than a specific property.

  • Anegundi: best for the sunrise climb, village walks and a quiet stay. Guesthouses and resorts are small, and the Madhwa mathas have a few rooms for pilgrims.
  • Hampi: across the river, with the widest choice of homestays and cafes. Anegundi is about 25 minutes away by road.
  • Hosapete: the larger town with more hotels and the nearest main railway station.
  • Koppal and Gangavati: practical for Koppal Fort, Hirebenakal, Kanakagiri and Itagi.

Book early between October and February and around Hanuman Jayanti.

How to Reach Koppal and Anegundi

  • By air: Jindal Vijayanagar Airport (Vidyanagar) is about 70 km from Anegundi. Hubballi and Bengaluru are the larger gateways.
  • By rail: Hosapete is the nearest main station for Hampi and Anegundi. Koppal city (about 45 km from Anegundi by Karnataka Tourism’s reckoning), Munirabad and Gangavati are the other railheads for the district.
  • By road: Anegundi is about 357 km from Bengaluru and can be reached directly via Koppal city. Several buses run from Bengaluru to Hampi and Koppal.

Getting around: From Hosapete, take a taxi or auto to Hampi and Anegundi. The Tungabhadra can be crossed by a road bridge or by a coracle at the Talarighata ferry on the Hampi side, depending on the water level. Hire a taxi or self-drive for Hirebenakal, Kanakagiri, Koppal and Itagi, because buses are infrequent.

Practical Tips and Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Climb Anjanadri at sunrise. The 550 to 570 steps are exposed and hot by mid-morning.
  • Check the river before planning Navabrindavana. Boats stop when the water is high.
  • Do not mix directions in one day. Itagi and Kuknur lie far west of Anegundi, and Hirebenakal and Kanakagiri lie on the Gangavati side.
  • Go to Hirebenakal with a guide. Reports describe rough ground and unclear paths.
  • Carry cash and water. Village shops, boat operators and small eateries often take cash only.
  • Dress modestly at temples and remove footwear at shrines.
  • Watch your food near temples and hills. Monkeys are common.
  • Treat Hanuman Jayanti and Phalguna fair days as crowd days. Plan for long queues or choose a weekday.

Nearby Trips and Onward Journeys from Koppal

  • Hampi and Vijayanagara: the UNESCO World Heritage ruins directly across the river.
  • Ballari: the fort, Sanganakallu and Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, an easy extension from Hosapete.
  • Raichur: Raichur Fort, the Ashokan edict at Maski and the road to Mantralayam.
  • Bagalkot: Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole, a day or two west of Itagi.
  • Davanagere and Chitradurga: head south-east on the Bengaluru highway for lakes, forts and Benne Dose.
  • Dharwad and Hubballi: about three hours to the north-west for a city stop.
