The short answer

The Annapoorneshwari temple at Horanadu is open from about 6:30 am to 9 pm, men remove their shirts and cover their shoulders, a free vegetarian lunch is served every day from around noon, and Mahamangalarati is at 9 am, 1:30 pm and 9 pm. Allow two hours, add Kalasa on the way, and drive in daylight.

Horanadu is a small village in the Kalasa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district, on the bank of the Bhadra at about 831 m. The temple, formally the Adishakthyathmaka Sri Annapoorneshwari temple, honours the goddess of food. The story the temple tells is that Shiva, after cutting off Brahma’s fifth head, found the skull stuck to his hand until Parvati filled it with food and freed him from the sin. That is the reason annadana is the heart of the place, and why the dining hall feeds every visitor regardless of caste, creed or language.

Tradition credits the sage Agastya with the original consecration, and the Annapoorneshwari image is linked with Adi Shankara. A new golden image was consecrated in 1973 by the seer of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham on Akshaya Tritiya, and the Dharmakartharu family still looks after the temple. The setting, with forest, coffee and areca around it, is as good as the darshan, so combine it with the Sringeri travel guide and the Chikmagalur trip guide.

The sanctum doors close during the Mahamangalarati, which lasts about half an hour, so plan your arrival around them. Men remove their shirts and banians and cover their shoulders with a towel or shawl as a mark of respect; the temple lends covers if you do not have one. Women wear sarees or other fully covered traditional clothes. Footwear stays outside, and photography is not allowed inside the sanctum. Souvenir stalls near the temple sell pooja items and local produce.

Allow at least two hours. The temple is quietest on weekday mornings and busiest on Sundays and festival days, when the line can extend well beyond an hour.

The free meal and where to stay

Every visitor is given a free vegetarian lunch in the dining hall, usually from around noon, and the meal is hot and simple, with rice, sambar, rasam, buttermilk and a sweet. Join the line before the 1:30 pm aarti to avoid waiting. The temple takes donations of rice for the annadana and sells prasada at the counter.

The temple offers basic low-cost rooms and free shelter for pilgrims in its premises, and there are small lodges in the village. Rooms get tight on Navaratri, Deepavali and Ugadi, so ask at the temple office as soon as you arrive. For better hotels, stay in Kalasa or Chikkamagaluru, or base yourself at a Malnad homestay; see the Chikkamagaluru district guide for the coffee-estate stays.

Kalasa is the usual add-on, because the Kalaseshwara temple is a short drive and the Bhadra wraps the town on three sides. Check the opening time before you go, as the temple closes in the early afternoon. The Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary offers jeep safaris in the same belt, and our wildlife safaris guide covers the national parks in the Western Ghats. Coffee breaks on the Balehonnur route, with the old masonry bridge over the Bhadra nearby, make a pleasant stop.
