Bangalore to Mysore by Train: Timings, Fares and Which One to Pick

More than 40 trains link Bengaluru City and Mysuru. This guide sorts them into the few worth booking: the two Vande Bharat services, the Shatabdi, the daily day expresses and the cheap chair-car options, with listed fares and the mistakes that cost travellers a seat.

Quick answer: which train should you take?

For speed, take the Vande Bharat (10:05 or 21:30 from Bengaluru City, about 2 hours). For the cheapest daytime seat, take the Rajya Rani, Wodeyar or Malgudi chair car at roughly ₹320, or a second-sitting seat at ₹100 where listed. The Shatabdi leaves at 10:35 and reaches Mysuru at 13:00. All of these start from KSR Bengaluru (Bengaluru City, station code SBC) and end at Mysuru Junction (MYS).

The rail distance is about 138 km, and the fast trains take 2 to 2.5 hours. The road trip by bus is usually longer: operator timetables on a booking site show 3 to 4 hours, even though the Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway was built to cut driving time to roughly 75 to 90 minutes. If you are comparing modes, our Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway guide covers the drive, and the KSRTC bus guide covers buses and booking.

Timings and fares below come from two independent train-tracking sites that agree on the main departures, plus a third site for the Vande Bharat route. None of them is Indian Railways, so book through IRCTC and check the schedule on the day. Fares are the figures one tracker lists and can differ with dynamic pricing and booking quota.

Bengaluru to Mysuru train timetable: the trains worth knowing

Erail lists 41 trains from Bengaluru City to Mysuru, but many are passenger or MEMU services with long stops, early-morning departures or a different Mysuru stop. This table keeps the ones most travellers use. Times are departure from Bengaluru City and arrival at Mysuru Junction.

Older travel blogs still print a 6:00 am Shatabdi and a 6:15 am Chamundi. Current tracker data shows the Shatabdi at 10:35, so check the date of any blog before you plan around it, including this one. Two Vande Bharat services pass through Bengaluru on the Chennai–Mysuru route, one in the morning and one at night. The morning 20607 stops at KSR Bengaluru at 10:00 to 10:05, so a Bengaluru passenger boards a train already running from Chennai. For the return, the Mysuru-side departures are not given with times in the sources we checked, so look up Mysuru Junction departures on IRCTC or NTES before you book a same-day return.

Fares by train and class

These are fares listed by a train-tracking site for Bengaluru City to Mysuru, in rupees. Vande Bharat and Shatabdi fares can include catering and may move with dynamic pricing, so the IRCTC total at booking is the number that counts. A second travel site gives a broad range of ₹60 to ₹1,200 across classes, which is consistent with this table.

Train, bus or car: what each really costs

For one adult, a Rajya Rani chair car is about ₹320 and a second-sitting seat is ₹100 where available. Bus fares listed on a booking site start at ₹199, and a travel operator quotes ₹200 to ₹600 depending on bus type. The same booking site shows more than 240 daily bus services from 92 operators, so buses win on frequency and late-night options. Trains win on predictability: the schedule does not depend on traffic around Bengaluru. For a car, one guide estimates ₹800 to ₹1,200 in fuel plus expressway tolls, which with tolls can exceed two chair-car tickets, in exchange for the freedom to stop. These are indicative comparisons, not quotes.

How to choose and book without mistakes

Pick by what your day looks like

Day trip from Bengaluru: take the 10:05 Vande Bharat to reach Mysuru at 12:20, which leaves the afternoon for the palace and the evening lights, then find a late return. Our Mysore Palace guide covers timings and tickets. Weekend trip: any day train works, and a Friday evening Vande Bharat gets you in at 23:30; our Mysuru 2-day itinerary then fills Saturday and Sunday. Onward to Coorg or Ooty: Mysuru is the railhead, and from there you take a cab or bus; see the Bangalore to Coorg transport guide.

Check the station name before paying

Bengaluru has more than one main station. Most expresses above leave from KSR Bengaluru (SBC), but some passenger services leave from SMVT Bengaluru (SMVB) or Yesvantpur, and a few MEMU services end at Ashokapuram, a separate Mysuru stop, not Mysuru Junction. The destination in the booking confirmation tells you which one you have. For arrival and onward options at the Bengaluru end, see the Karnataka airports guide if you are flying in first.

Booking tips

  • Reservations open 120 days ahead on IRCTC. Weekend and festival chair-car seats sell out, so book early. During Dasara, see the Mysore Dasara guide for crowd planning.
  • Choose the Vande Bharat for the shortest time, and the Shatabdi or Rajya Rani if a lower fare matters more than 15 minutes.
  • Do not assume the run days. The Vande Bharat and Shatabdi each skip one weekday according to current trackers; confirm for your date.
  • Do not trust older timings. Several blogs still show departures that no longer match tracker data.
  • Treat unreserved passenger trains as a last resort. They take 3 to 4 hours.
