Bangalore to Coorg: Road, Bus and Train Options, Time and Cost

Every way of getting from Bengaluru to Madikeri, compared on real drive times, fares and the catches: no railway station in Coorg, a ghat road at the end, and bus arrivals at 4 am.

~250 kmto Madikeri by road
5.5–6.5 hby car, with stops
₹300–₹1,100bus fare, by class

Quick answer: the best way to reach Coorg from Bangalore

Drive or take a KSRTC bus. Both reach Madikeri in roughly 5.5 to 7 hours, and nothing else is faster. Trains only get you as far as Mysuru, about 95 to 120 km short, and Coorg has no airport. Go by car for flexibility, by bus to save money and skip the ghat driving, and by train plus bus only if you are already in Mysuru.

Coorg (Kodagu) has no railway station and no airport, so every journey ends on a road. Madikeri, the usual base, is about 250 km from Bengaluru by the main route through Mysuru, though sources quote anything from 249 to 273 km depending on the route and where in Bengaluru they start. Plan on 5.5 to 6.5 hours of actual travel by car and 6 to 7 hours by bus. The last 30-odd km from Kushalnagar climb a ghat road and run slower than the expressway section by half.

The table compares the five realistic options. Fares and timings below come from operator listings and travel sources checked in October 2026, and they differ between sources, so ranges are shown rather than single figures. Confirm the final fare when you book.

By road: the two routes and how the drive breaks down

There are two sensible drives. Route 1 via Mysuru on NH 275 is the default and what most maps choose: Bengaluru, Bidadi, Ramanagara, Channapatna, Maddur, Mandya, Srirangapatna, the Mysuru bypass, Hunsur, Periyapatna, Kushalnagar, Suntikoppa and Madikeri, about 250 km. Route 2 via Channarayapatna leaves Bengaluru on NH 75 through Nelamangala and Kunigal, then cuts to Arakalgud and Somwarpet, about 260 to 273 km. It is quieter, but sources report stretches of poor surface or roadworks and fewer places to eat and refuel, so it suits drivers who know it or who live on the north side of the city.

Leg (Route 1)Approx. distanceRealistic speedWhat to expect
Bengaluru to Mysuru bypassAbout 118 kmUp to 100 km/h on the expresswayAround 90 minutes without traffic. Two-wheelers, autos and slow vehicles are barred from the main carriageway
Mysuru bypass to KushalnagarAbout 72 km60–80 km/hDivided highway through Hunsur and Periyapatna; town speed breakers slow it
Kushalnagar to MadikeriAbout 30–35 km40–50 km/hHill road with continuous curves; fog and rain cut visibility

Leg distances are from one detailed route guide and add up to about 220 km, which is lower than the 250 km most sources quote door to door. The difference is the stretch inside Bengaluru and the Mysuru bypass, so treat 250 km as the figure to plan with.

Tolls and the expressway

The first 118 km runs on the Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway, which is tolled; one travel source puts a car at about ₹320 each way, but the rate is revised periodically. Our Bengaluru–Mysuru Expressway guide carries the current toll, speed limit and entry-exit details, so check it before you leave. Keep a working FASTag. The other Mysuru–Kushalnagar stretches carry their own plaza charges.

Fuel cost: our estimate

At roughly 250 km each way and a petrol hatchback or compact SUV doing 14 to 16 km per litre, you need about 16 to 18 litres one way. At an assumed ₹100 to ₹110 a litre that is about ₹1,600 to ₹2,000 one way, so ₹3,200 to ₹4,000 for the round trip, plus tolls. Diesel and CNG change the sum, and so does a wet-weather crawl. Treat this as an estimate, not a quote.

Cab hire

Published quotes for a one-way drop from Bengaluru run from ₹2,000 to ₹3,500, and a three-day round-trip package is quoted near ₹10,000. A 250 km one-way fare below ₹3,500 is hard to reconcile with outstation tariffs, so our own estimate is ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 one way for a sedan, which is roughly 250 km at ₹14 to ₹18 a km plus driver allowance and tolls. Agree whether the quote includes tolls, parking and the driver’s night halt, and ask which route the driver will take. Full-day local cabs inside Coorg are quoted at about ₹2,200 to ₹3,500.

Driving rules that matter

  • Start by 5:30 to 6 am on weekends and holidays. Friday evening and Sunday evening are the worst for traffic at Mysuru and on the Bengaluru side.
  • Do not plan to reach Kushalnagar after dark. The hill road beyond it has no street lighting and sharp bends.
  • Fuel up in Kushalnagar or earlier, not on the ghat stretch. EV fast chargers are reported at expressway food plazas, Kushalnagar and Madikeri; confirm they are working before relying on them.
  • In June to September, check for landslide diversions before leaving. Our Coorg in monsoon guide covers what closes and when.

By bus: KSRTC, private AC and sleeper services

Buses are the cheapest way to Madikeri and run through the day and night. An aggregator listing for the route counts nearly 27 buses from six operators, with the first departure at about 7 am and the last around 11 pm to 11:30 pm. Listed journey times run from 4 hours 45 minutes to 7 hours 15 minutes, with about 6 hours the average, and the Kushalnagar–Madikeri climb is why 6 to 7 hours is the safer planning figure.

Bus typeListed fareNotes
KSRTC ordinary and Rajahamsa (non-AC)About ₹300–₹480Frequent day and night departures from Kempegowda Bus Station (Majestic) and Satellite Bus Stand on Mysore Road
KSRTC Airavat Club Class (AC semi-sleeper)About ₹600–₹850Morning and evening departures reported
Non-AC sleeper (KSRTC or private)About ₹500–₹650Overnight; leaves 10 pm to midnight, arrives roughly 4 to 7 am
Private AC sleeper and VolvoAbout ₹550–₹1,100 (some listings show higher peaks)Boarding points include Marathahalli, Silk Board, Hebbal, Yelahanka, Kalyan Nagar and Bellandur

Three sources give three different fare ladders, which is normal for dynamic pricing around holidays. Check the live fare on the KSRTC booking site. For bus classes, the Shakti free-travel scheme and counters, see our KSRTC bus guide.

Where the bus drops you

KSRTC buses end at the Madikeri bus stand in the town centre. Private buses may drop at Madikeri bus stand or at points such as Guddada Cross or the Abbi Falls road, so confirm the drop point when you book. From the stand, autos reach most Madikeri homestays, but estate stays 6 to 8 km out need a pre-arranged pickup.

The 4 am problem

An overnight bus can put you in Madikeri before most hotels allow check-in, in cold and sometimes rain. Book the room from the previous night, or ask your homestay if early arrival is possible. Our Coorg stay guide lists areas and what each costs. If you only want day sights, hire a local cab from the stand rather than waiting.

Other towns in Kodagu

Buses also run to Kushalnagar, Virajpet, Gonikoppal and Somwarpet. For Dubare or Bylakuppe, book to Kushalnagar and take a local auto. For Virajpet and the south, book to Virajpet directly; going via Madikeri adds an hour.

By train: Bengaluru to Mysuru, then onward to Coorg

Kodagu has no railway line, so rail means a train to Mysuru Junction, the nearest railhead, then a bus or cab for the remaining road leg. Sources put Mysuru anywhere from 95 to 120 km from Madikeri; the road is about 120 km by the usual route, with the lower figures measuring to the district border. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours for that leg. Hassan, Mangaluru and Kannur stations are listed as other options but connect poorly to Madikeri from Bengaluru.

Bengaluru and Mysuru are linked by many trains, with journey times between about 2 hours and 2 hours 55 minutes. The services below are the ones listed on a rail timetable aggregator, with fares as listed there. Timetables and running days change, so check NTES or the IRCTC site on the day of booking.

The fare listings are from one aggregator and some look dated, especially chair-car prices on the Vande Bharat and Shatabdi, so use them only for comparing options. Take the final fare from IRCTC.

Mysuru to Madikeri

KSRTC and private buses leave Mysuru for Madikeri through the day, usually via Hunsur, Periyapatna and Kushalnagar, and take about 2.5 to 3 hours. One source lists the ordinary fare at ₹150 to ₹250, another gives ₹300 to ₹888 depending on class and operator. A cab from Mysuru station is quoted at around ₹3,000. If you are catching an afternoon train, remember the road leg ends in the dark; a late-evening arrival in Madikeri is better handled with a booked pickup.

When train plus bus actually makes sense

It rarely beats a direct bus from Bengaluru, which takes about the same time with no change. It helps if you are spending a day in Mysuru first, because you can see the palace and then continue; our Mysuru 2-day itinerary and Mysore Palace guide show how. It also fits travellers who arrive in Bengaluru on a long-distance train and want to continue by the Shatabdi or Vande Bharat.

By air: which airport is nearest to Coorg

Coorg has no airport. From Bengaluru there is no reason to fly: the road is 5.5 to 6.5 hours and a flight to another city gains nothing. Flying matters if you are coming from outside Karnataka. Distances to Madikeri vary by source, so the ranges below are what to plan with.

AirportDistance to MadikeriNotes
Mangaluru (IXE)About 136–160 km, around 3 hNearest major airport; ghat road via Sampaje
Kannur (CNN), KeralaAbout 90 km (57 km to Virajpet)Closest by distance; useful for southern Kodagu and arrivals from the Gulf
MysuruAbout 118 kmFew flights, so rarely practical
Calicut (CCJ)About 179 kmAlternative from Kerala
Bengaluru (BLR)About 260 kmMost flights, but longest road leg

KSRTC restarted a Flybus service between Kempegowda Airport and Madikeri in 2021 at ₹1,000, with night and midday departures, but we could not confirm that it runs today, so ask KSRTC before relying on it. A fuller comparison of airports across the state is in our Karnataka airports guide.

Transport cost for two, compared

These are our own working figures for two adults, one way, built from the listed fares and assumptions above. Round trip is double.

Option (for two)One wayHow we got it
KSRTC ordinary/Rajahamsa₹600–₹9602 × ₹300–₹480
Airavat or private AC₹1,100–₹2,2002 × ₹550–₹1,100
Train to Mysuru plus bus₹500–₹1,9002 × (₹100–₹725 train + ₹150–₹300 bus); the top end assumes premium trains
Own car₹1,900–₹2,400 plus parking₹1,600–₹2,000 fuel plus about ₹320 toll, before any extra plazas
Outstation cab₹4,000–₹6,000Estimate: 250 km at ₹14–₹18/km plus allowance and toll

The bus wins for one or two travellers. A car overtakes it at four people, and once you include the cost of getting around Coorg, where public transport is thin, the car’s flexibility often justifies itself. For the whole trip budget, including stays, food and entry fees, use our Coorg 3-day itinerary and trip cost and the state-wide Karnataka trip cost guide.

Mistakes that cost time

  • Booking a train to Mysuru for the same afternoon and finding the Madikeri road leg ends after dark.
  • Choosing an overnight bus without a room waiting at 4 am.
  • Relying on the shortest Google Maps route in monsoon, when landslide diversions can add hours.
  • Taking Route 2 as a shortcut. It is not clearly shorter and has fewer services.
  • Leaving Bengaluru after 8 am on a Saturday of a long weekend. See our 2027 long weekends guide for crowded dates.

Bangalore to Coorg: frequently asked questions

About 250 km to Madikeri by the main route through Mysuru. Sources quote 249 to 273 km depending on the route and your starting point in Bengaluru.

Plan on 5.5 to 6.5 hours by car and 6 to 7 hours by bus. The expressway section is fast; the last 30-odd km of ghat road beyond Kushalnagar are slow.

No. Coorg has no railway station. The nearest railhead is Mysuru Junction, about 95 to 120 km from Madikeri depending on the source, and you finish by bus or cab.

Listed fares run from about ₹300 on ordinary buses to ₹1,100 on private AC sleepers, with KSRTC Airavat around ₹600 to ₹850. Fares rise around holidays, so check the live price when booking.

Mangaluru is the nearest major airport at roughly 136 to 160 km, about 3 hours by road. Kannur in Kerala is closer in distance, about 90 km. From Bengaluru, driving is simpler than flying.

Via Mysuru on NH 275 for most people: it has the expressway, more food and fuel stops, and links to Bylakuppe and Dubare. The Channarayapatna route is quieter but reported to have poorer stretches.

Yes, if you leave before 6 am and drop extra stops. Our weekend getaways guide compares Coorg with other trips from the city.

It is best avoided. Beyond Kushalnagar the road is a lit-by-headlights ghat with sharp bends, and fog or rain cuts visibility. Plan to reach Kushalnagar in daylight.
