CHIKKABALLAPUR DISTRICT · SUNRISE HILL FORT · UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Nandi Hills Sunrise Guide: Timings, Fees, Route and a Plan That Works

Nandi Hills is a granite hill fort about 60 km north of Bengaluru, rising to roughly 1,480 m near Chikkaballapur. It is the closest proper sunrise hill to the city, and also the most crowded. This guide gives you the timeline, the money, the weekend traps and a plan that gets you to the viewpoint before the light.

The short answer

Go on a weekday between October and February, leave Bengaluru by about 4 am, and be at the summit parking 30 to 45 minutes before sunrise. Carry small cash for the gate. Skip weekends and public holidays unless you accept queues, a full car park and a crowded viewpoint. If you only want the view, Nandi works just as well at 8 am on a weekday, when it is nearly empty.

Nandi Hills sits in Chikkaballapur district, about 10 km from Chikkaballapur town and roughly 35 km from Kempegowda International Airport. The road from central Bengaluru is 57 to 60 km. The hill collects cloud on many mornings, so a clear sunrise is never guaranteed. Think of it as a good-odds morning, not a promise.

The hill has been fortified for centuries. Its older name was Anandagiri, a Ganga-era fortress developed it, and Tipu Sultan later used it as a summer retreat. In 1791 Cornwallis’s army took the fort during the Third Anglo-Mysore War after a siege of about three weeks, and British officials, among them General Mark Cubbon, later used the hill as a hot-season retreat. You are walking through that layer of history, not just standing on a viewpoint.

Is Nandi Hills worth it?

Yes, if you go in the right season and on the right day. It is a poor choice on a Sunday in January, when the road backs up and the sunrise point turns into a crowd of phones. For a calmer morning in the same district, read our guide to places to visit in Chikkaballapur, and for other quick escapes see weekend getaways from Bangalore.

Timings, entry fee and parking

The hill is run by the Horticulture Department. Entry is cheap, and parking is the real cost. Fees are revised from time to time, so keep Rs 20 per head and Rs 200 for the car in small notes and check the board at the gate.

ItemDetailsTip
Gate hours6 am to 6 pm, every dayBe down before dark
EntryRs 5 per personCarry coins and small notes
Two-wheeler parkingRs 15Bikes stop at the fort entrance
Car parkingRs 60, higher near the sunrise pointArrive early for the best spot
Weekend passA district pass with vehicle caps (1,000 two-wheelers and 300 light vehicles in 2022) has been used on busy weekendsAsk at the base counter

The weekend cap matters more than any ticket price. When the summit car park fills, the gate can stop letting vehicles up. That is the biggest reason weekend sunrise trips fail. Arriving before the crowd, not paying less, is how you win here.

The sunrise timeline, hour by hour

The rule is to reach the top 30 to 45 minutes before sunrise. Work backwards from that. The plan below assumes a weekday drive of about 1 hour 15 minutes before dawn traffic (our estimate; the normal daytime drive is 1.5 to 2 hours). Add 30 minutes if you are leaving on a Friday or Saturday night.

TimeWhat happensWhy
3:45 amLeave Hebbal and take the Bellary Road (NH 44) northEmpty airport road, no traffic

Approximate sunrise by month

Times are for Bengaluru, accurate to about 10 minutes. Check a weather app the night before for the exact minute and the cloud forecast.

MonthSunrise (approx.)Sky
Dec to Jan6:35 to 6:45 amBest: cool, dry, clear
Feb to Mar6:20 to 6:40 amGood, warming up
Apr to May5:55 to 6:10 amHazy, early heat
Jun to Sep5:55 to 6:10 amCloud and mist; the sun is often hidden, but the fog is the show
Oct to Nov6:10 to 6:25 amGood as the monsoon clears

The cool season, September to February, is the best window, with temperatures around 10 to 25 degrees C. The monsoon brings mist and green slopes but slippery roads. If you want clouds instead of a sunrise disc, our monsoon guide explains the trade, and the winter guide covers the clear-sky months.

How to reach Nandi Hills

ModeRouteGood to know
Own car or bikeHebbal flyover, NH 44 north past the airport, left at the Devanahalli bypass towards Nandi Cross, then uphillBest for sunrise; 1.5 to 2 hours in normal traffic
CabSame road, driver waitsAgree the price and waiting time in advance
Direct busA morning service leaves Majestic around 8:30 am; about Rs 50Too late for sunrise
Bus via ChikkaballapurBus to Chikkaballapur, then a local bus or shared auto uphillSlow; evening returns are sparse
TrainPassenger train towards Chikkaballapur; Nandi Halt is about 10 km from the hillDay trip only

Public transport reaches the base or the main gate, not the viewpoints, so you will walk or share a vehicle. If you do not drive, a cab is the only practical way to catch sunrise. For the wider region around the city, see places to visit in Bangalore and Bengaluru Rural.

What to see once you are up

Most visitors see only the sunrise point and leave by 8 am. The hilltop rewards another hour.

Tipu’s Drop

A sheer cliff on the hill’s edge where, according to local tradition, prisoners were pushed. Stay behind the railings, as the edge is unforgiving.

Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple

The main temple on the hill, an ancient Shiva shrine said to be around a thousand years old and linked to the hill’s Chola-era past. Dress modestly and remove footwear. Pair it with the stone path that leads up from Tipu’s Drop.

Amruth Sarovar

A stepped tank fed by springs, dated to 1928. It is a good photo stop and a cool pause when the sun is up.

Tipu’s summer retreat and the Cubbon House

The rest house and the mid-1800s British summer residence show how the hill served two successive rulers as a hot-season retreat. Ask at the gate whether the interiors are open.

Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple

At the base of the hill in Nandi village. It is a separate stop and a better use of your time than the summit crowd if you have a car.

Trekking up Nandi Hills

There is a walking route from Sultanpet village. It follows an old stone staircase from the Tipu era, reaches a fort gate in about an hour, and takes 2 to 3 hours for the full ascent. The gradient is easy, mostly steady uphill. There is no water on the way, so carry at least 2 litres. In the monsoon the path turns muddy.

This is a fitness-and-company walk, not a wilderness trek. If you want a proper climb, our treks in Karnataka guide lists better options. Start before dawn only if you know the path or are with someone who does, and carry a torch. Monkeys on the hill go for bags with food.

What a Nandi Hills morning costs

Our estimate for a car with 4 people, assuming about 130 km round trip, 15 km per litre and petrol near Rs 100 a litre. Change the inputs for your car and the fuel price on the day.

ItemEstimate (Rs)Basis
FuelAbout 870130 km, 15 km/l, Rs 100/l
Entry20Rs 5 x 4 people
Car parking60Standard rate
Breakfast on the hill or in town400 to 800Rs 100 to 200 each
Total for the carAbout 1,350 to 1,750Roughly Rs 340 to 440 per person

Food on the hill is limited, so carry packaged snacks and water. Eat a proper breakfast in Chikkaballapur or on your way back instead of queueing at the hilltop stalls.

Mistakes that ruin the morning

  • Going on a weekend or holiday without a plan. Vehicle caps and queues are the main failure point.
  • Leaving at 4:30 am for a 6 am sunrise. That leaves no margin for the hairpins, queue and parking.
  • Ignoring the weather. A cloudy forecast means a grey sky, not a sunrise. Check the night before.
  • Carrying food openly. Monkeys snatch it.
  • Staying after dark. Visibility on the hairpins drops and the gate closes at 6 pm.

Pair it with a nearby stop

Skandagiri, Channagiri, Brahmagiri and Hemagiri are neighbouring hills; Skandagiri in particular is known for night treks and cloud-level sunrise, though it needs its own planning. Chikkaballapur town is known for its grape farms, and Muddenahalli, the birthplace of the engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya, is close by. For a longer trip, browse the hill stations of Karnataka and our summer guide for cooler picks, or take the road to Chikmagalur for a full weekend.
