Mysuru 2-Day Itinerary: Palace, Zoo, Chamundi Hills and Somanathapura (2026)

A tested two-day order for Mysuru: the city core on day one, the zoo, railway museum and a Hoysala temple on day two. With opening hours, fees, closed days, a cost estimate and a clear note of which figures we could confirm and which you should check on the day.

Quick answer: how to spend two days in Mysuru

Day 1: Chamundi Hills at first light, Mysore Palace from 10 am, Jaganmohan Palace gallery, Devaraja Market and St Philomena’s Church. Day 2: the zoo and Railway Museum in the morning, Somanathapura in the afternoon. Do not plan day 2 for a Tuesday, because the zoo is closed. If you can only stay one night, arrive early on day 1 and treat the Somanathapura leg as optional.

Mysuru is compact. The palace, gallery, market and church sit within a few kilometres of each other, so the real planning problem is not distance but closing days and the heat. Most of what is worth doing is indoors or shaded between 10 am and 5:30 pm; the best light for the hill and the market is early. This plan is built around those constraints rather than around a list of ‘top ten’ sights.

We kept the heavy detail for the single-topic guides: the Mysore Palace guide for the interior, the Chamundi Hills guide for the 1,008 steps and darshan queues, and the Hoysala temples guide for the bigger picture on Somanathapura. For the wider district, including places beyond the city, see places to visit in Mysuru.

Every fee below was checked against at least one fetched source; where a figure rests on a single listing or sources disagree, the table in the fees section says so. Nothing here is an official notice, so confirm on the day.

Day 1: hill, palace, gallery, market

Hill13 km from the cityPalace10 am to 5:30 pmGallery10 am to 5 pmChurchfree entry

Morning: Chamundi Hills before the palace

Start at the hill because it is cooler and the temple queue is shortest early. Our Chamundi Hills guide puts the temple about 13 km from central Mysuru, a 15 to 20 minute drive up, with 1,008 stone steps if you would rather walk. A fit adult should allow roughly an hour to an hour and a half for the climb; that is an estimate. General darshan is free. If steps are not for you, take a taxi or bus up and walk down so your knees do the easier half. Be back in the city by 10 am.

Mid-morning: Mysore Palace

The palace board lists daily timings of 10 am to 5:30 pm, and Karnataka Tourism gives the same hours. Tickets are where sources disagree. A tourism listing shows Rs 70 for adults, but a news report on the October 2024 revision puts Indian adults at Rs 120, children aged 10 to 17 at Rs 70 and children under 10 free, with foreign visitors at Rs 1,000. The newer figure is the safer one to budget, and the counter will confirm it. Budget about two hours inside; our palace guide walks through the halls. Phones and cameras are routinely restricted inside, so travel light.

The lights are the reason to plan the evening: Karnataka Tourism lists illumination from 7 to 8 pm on Sundays and public holidays. It also lists a 45-minute sound and light show at 7 and 8 pm on weekdays, in Kannada from Monday to Wednesday and in English from Thursday to Saturday, with none on Sundays or government holidays. That is one source, so check the board at the gate. Dasara dates are covered in Mysore Dasara 2026.

Afternoon: Jaganmohan Palace art gallery

A short walk from the main palace, this smaller building is now the Sri Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery. Karnataka Tourism lists more than 2,500 paintings and artefacts, including a Raja Ravi Varma painting titled Shakti and murals of Dasara and mythology, with a Durbar Hall of stained glass and wooden pillars. It lists 10 am to 5 pm and Rs 40 for Indian visitors, Rs 100 for foreign visitors, and says closed on Mondays. We found no second source for the closing day, so do not make the gallery your only plan for a Monday. Have lunch before you go, because the wait for a table around the palace gets long after 1 pm.

Late afternoon: Devaraja Market and St Philomena’s

Devaraja Market dates from 1886 according to Wikipedia, covers about 3.67 acres and runs along Sayyaji Rao Road. Expect flowers, fruit, kumkum, spices, incense and sandalwood goods. We did not find reliable opening hours, so go in the late afternoon when it is lively and shops are certainly open. Bargain politely for non-food items. Then walk or auto to St Philomena’s Church, whose neo-Gothic design has twin spires reported at 175 feet and a crypt under the altar with a relic of the saint. One travel source gives entry as free and hours of roughly 5 am to 6 pm, with others reporting later closing; treat it as ‘open until about 6 pm’ and arrive by 5:15.

Evening

If it is a Sunday or a holiday, return for the palace lights. On other days the sound and light show is the alternative. Dinner is in the ‘food’ section below.

Day 2: zoo, railway museum and a Hoysala temple

Zoo8:30 am to 5:30 pm, not TuesdayMuseum9:30 am to 5:30 pmTempleentry by ASI e-ticket

Morning: the zoo

The zoo’s own site lists 8:30 am to 5:30 pm daily except Tuesday, and a Deccan Herald report confirms Tuesday as the weekly off day (with occasional holiday exceptions). Entry is Rs 120 for adults and Rs 60 for children aged 5 to 12, with under-5s free. That matches a July 2025 report that a 20 percent hike took Rs 100 to about Rs 120. The zoo’s site also lists a still camera at Rs 100 and battery vehicles at Rs 240 for adults and Rs 180 for children and senior citizens. The battery vehicle is worth it for older relatives, since the grounds are large. Arrive when it opens: animals are more active and the heat is lower. If your day 2 falls on a Tuesday, swap in Srirangapatna and Brindavan Gardens, and push the railway museum to the afternoon.

Midday: Railway Museum

The museums portal lists the Mysuru Railway Museum as open 9:30 am to 5:30 pm every day, closing only on public holidays, with adult entry Rs 20 and child Rs 10 (foreign adults Rs 80, children Rs 40) and a toy train ride at Rs 15 (foreign nationals Rs 60). It was established in 1979 and displays the ES-506 steam locomotive, the Maharani Saloon and royal coaches, among others. This is a single official-portal listing, so call it a good guide rather than a promise. It is a cheap, quick stop and a good break from walking if you have children. See also our Karnataka with kids guide.

Afternoon: Somanathapura

The Keshava temple at Somanathapura is one of three Hoysala temples inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 (the others are Belur and Halebidu). It is a star-shaped, soapstone temple with layered friezes of elephants, horses and scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, and it is no longer used for worship. The distance from Mysuru is not stated on any official page we fetched; the drive is commonly described as about an hour, and we estimate roughly 35 km. Public buses via Bannur exist but a local page calls them limited and recommends a cab arranged through your hotel. Plan about two hours on site, so leave Mysuru by 1:30 pm.

Timings differ by source. An ASI-linked local page says sunrise to sunset, with entry closing 30 minutes before sunset and tickets valid for three hours, bookable as e-tickets only, with original photo ID required at the gate. That notice was dated December 2020. A state tourism page lists 7 am to 9 pm. Because these conflict, reach by 4 pm at the latest and carry your ID. We could not confirm the current ticket amount, so we do not quote one. If Somanathapura leaves you wanting more, the Belur and Halebidu day trip covers the other two temples.

A rough budget for two days (estimate)

Entry fees for one Indian adult on this plan add up to about Rs 315 (palace Rs 120, gallery Rs 40, zoo Rs 120, museum Rs 20, toy train Rs 15). Everything else is our estimate, not a quoted price: assume Rs 700 to Rs 1,200 a day for meals in ordinary restaurants, Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500 for a return cab to Somanathapura with waiting time, and local autos between sights on top. Hotel prices swing widely between the Dasara period and the rest of the year, so we do not quote a number; see the Karnataka trip cost guide for how we build budgets. Foreign visitors should note the palace fee is far higher, as above.

What to eat and buy

Mysore Pak is the obvious purchase. The central tourism portal names Guru Sweet Mart on Sayyaji Rao Road, run by descendants of the royal cook who is credited with inventing it, and Mahalakshmi Sweets on Devaraj Urs Road. For silk it names the Government Silk Factory and the KR Circle area, and for sandalwood and rosewood handicrafts the Cauvery Handicrafts Emporium on Sayyaji Rao Road. It does not say whether the emporium is government-run, so ask for a bill and a material certificate on sandalwood. For more ideas on gifts and what is genuine, see what to buy in Karnataka, and for meals the food guide.

A practical rule: eat your sweet purchase on day 1 so you can judge freshness, and buy silk or sandalwood on day 2 when you know your luggage space.

Getting around and when to go

Stay near the palace or the city bus stand so day 1 is walkable and autos are cheap; the Somanathapura leg needs a cab. From Bengaluru the road takes roughly two to three hours per our palace guide, and trains and KSRTC buses are frequent (see the KSRTC bus guide). A Bengaluru-based traveller can also fold this into a long weekend; see weekend getaways from Bangalore.

October to March is the comfortable season, as covered in best time to visit Karnataka. Dasara is spectacular but expensive and crowded, so book rooms well ahead and expect the Chamundi Hills leg to take longer. In the rains, keep a flexible afternoon.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Planning the zoo on a Tuesday.
  • Reaching the palace after 4 pm and rushing the interior.
  • Climbing the steps in midday heat in April or May.
  • Arriving at Somanathapura without photo ID or after closing.
  • Paying anyone outside the hill temple for ‘fast darshan’; use official counters only.

Mysuru 2-day itinerary: frequently asked questions

Yes for the main sights: the palace, Chamundi Hills, the market, the zoo and one day trip such as Somanathapura. Add a third day for Srirangapatna, Brindavan Gardens or Talakadu.

10 am to 5:30 pm daily according to the palace board and Karnataka Tourism. The lights are listed for 7 to 8 pm on Sundays and public holidays.

A report on the October 2024 revision gives Rs 120 for Indian adults, Rs 70 for children aged 10 to 17, free for under 10 and Rs 1,000 for foreigners. An older tourism listing shows Rs 70. Confirm at the counter.

Tuesday. The zoo opens 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on other days, with adult entry at Rs 120 and children 5 to 12 at Rs 60.

Yes if you like sculpture. It is a UNESCO-listed Hoysala temple (inscribed 2023) with dense soapstone carving. Allow about two hours on site plus roughly an hour each way by road, and carry photo ID.

The city core, yes, by autos and walking. Somanathapura is awkward by bus because services are limited, so a cab is easier.

Hill first at dawn, palace after 10 am. The hill is cooler and quieter early, and the palace only opens at 10.

Skip the zoo and do Srirangapatna and Brindavan Gardens, then shift the railway museum to the afternoon.
