Quick answer: what to eat in Mangaluru

Order neer dosa with chicken ghee roast or kori gassi, a fried fish thali at a Bunder or Kodailbail eatery at lunch, Mangalore buns for breakfast, and a gadbad ice cream in the evening. Fish lunches are served in a window: the listing we found for Hotel Narayana runs 12:05 to 3:30 pm and again 7 to 9:30 pm, so a 4 pm arrival gets you nothing.

Mangaluru eats three overlapping ways. The Tuluva home kitchen gives you kori rotti, neer dosa and the coconut-and-chilli gravies. Mangalorean Catholic cooking adds pork preparations such as sorpotel and bafat, influenced by the Portuguese, and the ros curry served at wedding ceremonies. Machali, one of the best-known fish restaurants, is run by a Konkani family. Fish is the staple because the city sits on the coast, and the strongest reason to come hungry is a fresh-catch thali.

Restaurant details here come from guides published between 2017 and 2024, and we say which year each detail comes from. Menus, prices and opening hours move, so confirm by phone or at the door. For a state-wide view of what to eat, see our food to try in Karnataka guide, and for the city around the plates, our Mangaluru guide.

Kori rotti is described as a compulsory dish on Sundays and special occasions in Tulu homes. The wafers keep for a long time, and a guide notes they are sold in grocery stores in Mangaluru and Udupi, so you can take them home and ask for the curry fresh. Mangalore buns appear on menus as breakfast and snack items, and one guide records that they are made with banana pulp kneaded into all-purpose flour.

A caution on names: a Wikipedia entry describes snacks such as happala, sandige and puli munchi as unique to the city, while another guide lists puli munchi as a tangy fish curry. We have left it out of the table because sources disagree on what it is. Ask the cook rather than assuming.

Where to eat: ten places that appear in more than one guide

We listed only places named by at least two independent guides, except where marked. Timings come from an Outlook Traveller listing dated 13 May 2024 unless stated, so treat them as the last published values and call ahead.

Giri Manja’s has a documented history: a December 2017 report says it was founded in 1984, was named about a decade before the report by the founder’s son, who also introduced the tawa fry, and seats 40 with a second branch across the road. That report is from 2017, so treat the story as background and check who runs it today. Two of the places that most guides recommend, Narayana and Giri Manja’s, are both in Bunder, which makes the old port area the best single neighbourhood for a seafood lunch.

How to order a fish meal like a local

  • Arrive inside the lunch window. The listings we found show fish restaurants closing the afternoon between 3:30 pm and 7 pm.
  • Ask what came in today. At Hotel Narayana a waiter reportedly brings a tray of the day’s catch and you choose the piece to be fried. At Giri Manja’s the varieties change daily with the catch.
  • Know anjal. It is seer fish. It is the safest first order because most guides name it.
  • Expect a wait at small places. Giri Manja’s is described by multiple guides as tiny, and Machali is described as crowded.
  • Order a ghee roast to share. Prawn, squid, crab and chicken versions all appear on menus, and the sauce suits neer dosa.
  • Carry cash and call ahead. We found no card-acceptance details for the small places.

Budget, with the assumptions shown

The only per-head prices we found are from a November 2019 Deccan Chronicle piece: about ₹200 per person at Giri Manja’s and about ₹140 at a smaller tawa-fish place. A fish meal costs more today. Our estimate, assuming prices have risen roughly 5 to 7 percent a year since 2019, is about ₹280 to ₹330 per head at similar places for a thali with a fry. Treat it as a floor, add more for prawns, crab or the larger restaurants, and verify at the door.

If you do not eat fish

Mangaluru is easier than its reputation. One guide points out that vegetarian versions of ghee roast (paneer, mushroom) and sukka (soya) are common, and that kadale manoli, ivy gourd with chickpeas in a coconut base, goes with neer dosa. Other guides name Woodlands for a vegetarian thali and Janatha Deluxe for a neer dosa combo. For temple-town vegetarian meals nearby, see our Udupi Krishna Matha guide and Dharmasthala guide for the free temple meals.

Mangalorean Catholic and Tuluva food: what to know

Most visitor guides stay with the coastal staples above, but the city’s food also carries its communities. Wikipedia’s account of Mangalorean cuisine covers the Catholic repertoire: sanna paired with pork as sanna-dukra maas, sorpotel with Portuguese influence, bafat, and laitao, a pork roast it calls the centrepiece of wedding dinners. It also describes rosachi kadi, a fish curry made with coconut milk and served at the ros ceremony before a Catholic wedding. These are home and celebration foods more than restaurant staples, and few restaurants publish them. If a local family or host offers them, that is the better introduction. Muslim kitchens in the city are associated with mutton biryani.

Kori rotti, kori gassi and neer dosa belong to the Tuluva table, and kori rotti is described as the dish of Sunday meals and occasions in Tulunadu homes. If a restaurant serves it on a Sunday, that is usually a good sign. Do not assume a single restaurant covers all the communities; a Konkani-run seafood place and a vegetarian Udupi-style tiffin room are different kitchens.

This route is a plan, not a measured itinerary. We have not verified the travel time between stops, so keep a buffer and use a cab or auto between neighbourhoods. On a day you also want sea air, our Mangaluru beaches guide gives a late-afternoon loop that fits between lunch and the ice cream stop, and the Mangaluru to Gokarna road trip continues up the coast.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching a fish restaurant at 4 pm, after the lunch window closes.
  • Planning a Sunday visit to Indra Bhavan or the Balli Shop, both listed as closed on Sundays.
  • Looking for a menu and a signboard at tiny places. Some have neither.
  • Filling up on buns and missing the thali; they are filling.
  • Treating old price lists as current.

Mangaluru food: frequently asked questions

Neer dosa with chicken ghee roast, kori rotti, fried fish such as anjal (seer), Mangalore buns, goli baje and gadbad ice cream. Fish is the staple because the city is on the coast.

Crisp dry rice wafers served with a spicy coconut-based chicken curry. Kori means chicken in Tulu, and the dish is associated with Sunday meals and special occasions in Tulu homes.

Neer dosa is made from soaked rice and water with salt and is not fermented, so it is thin and soft. Regular dosa batter is usually fermented.

Guides most often name Hotel Narayana and Giri Manja’s in Bunder, and Machali and Shetty Lunch Home in Kodailbail. Gajalee in Kadri is named for tawa-fried fish. Check hours first because lunch and dinner windows are separate.

Yes. Neer dosa, buns, goli baje, kottige idli and Udupi-style meals are vegetarian, and many places serve paneer or mushroom ghee roast. Ask for kadale manoli with neer dosa.

The latest per-head figures we found are from 2019 (about ₹140 to ₹200). Our estimate for similar places now is roughly ₹280 to ₹330 for a thali with a fry, with more for prawns, crab or larger restaurants. Confirm on site.

A tall glass of ice cream layered with fruit, nuts, jelly and syrup. Guides name Pabba’s in Lalbagh and Ideal in Hampankatta for it. It is sometimes spelt gudbud.

Sanna with pork, sorpotel, bafat, laitao (a wedding pork roast) and rosachi kadi, a coconut-milk fish curry served at the ros ceremony before weddings. These are mostly home and celebration dishes.
