KARNATAKA TRAVEL GUIDE · UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
Murudeshwar Temple Guide: Timings, Dress Code, Gopura Lift and Netrani Island
Everything you need for Murudeshwar in one place: darshan timings, the dress code the temple introduced in 2025, what the gopura lift and statue cave involve, how to reach, and how a Netrani Island dive or snorkel trip works.
Quick answer: planning Murudeshwar
Murudeshwar is a coastal Shiva temple town in Uttara Kannada on NH66, built around a 123-foot Shiva statue and a gopura with a lift to the top. Give it half a day for the temple, statue and beach, or two days if you add Netrani Island. Darshan runs roughly 6 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 8 pm (sources differ by 15 to 30 minutes), and in 2025 the temple introduced a dress code: dhoti or full-length formal trousers for men, saree or salwar kameez for women. Visit October to March; diving season at Netrani is November to May.
The town sits on Kanduka Hill with the Arabian Sea on three sides, in Bhatkal taluk, Uttara Kannada district. Most visitors reach it by road on NH66 or by Konkan Railway, and it works well as a stop between Udupi and Gokarna; our Mangaluru to Gokarna coastal road trip shows where it fits, and the Uttara Kannada district guide covers the wider region.
Fees, timings and rules below come from the sources I checked in October 2026. Several are older travelogues, and I mark those. Confirm at the temple counter before you plan around any single number.
Temple timings, pujas and dress code
| Item | What sources say | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Darshan | About 6 am to 1 pm, then about 3 pm to 8 pm; sources give the evening close as 8:00, 8:15 or 8:30 pm | Consistent morning times; evening close varies |
| Morning puja | About 6:30 to 7:30 am | One temple-travel source |
| Maha puja | About 12:15 to 1:00 pm | One temple-travel source |
| Night puja | About 7:15 to 8:15 pm | One temple-travel source |
| Entry fee | Free for the temple and statue area; you cannot go inside the statue | Two sources |
| Photography | Allowed in most of the complex but not near the sanctum | One source |
The 2025 dress code
In June 2025 the temple management put up a notice at the entrance setting out what devotees may wear. Men are expected to wear a dhoti (panche) or full-length formal trousers; women a saree or salwar kameez. Reports say casual and western-style clothing is not allowed in the sacred areas, including the inner sanctum. The reports I read did not mention penalties or how strictly it is applied, so ask at the entrance if you are unsure and carry a change of clothes if you are coming straight from the beach. Shorts, sleeveless tops and beachwear are best kept for later in the day.
Crowd timing
Pilgrims start arriving around 7 am, crowds thin as sunset approaches, and the town is quiet by 8 pm; most shops close around then, though eateries stay open. Karnataka Tourism suggests going early to avoid lift queues. Maha Shivaratri, usually in late February or March, is celebrated here and will be very crowded.
What to see: statue, gopura, cave and beach
The Shiva statue
The seated Shiva statue is about 123 feet (37 m) and faces the sea. Sources call it the second or third tallest Shiva statue in the world; I avoid the ranking because it depends on what is counted. A travel blog dates it to 2006. It is a viewing statue, not an enterable one, so do not plan to climb inside.
Raja Gopura and the lift
The Raja Gopura is the tall temple tower, and a lift runs to a viewing level with views of the temple complex, the statue and the sea; one source places the viewing deck on the 18th floor. Its height is reported at about 249 feet by most sources, 247 to 249 by another and about 237 by a third, and storey counts range from 20 to 21. The gopura is generally dated to 2008. An older travelogue puts the lift ticket at ₹10 per person, another source says only that a small charge applies, and I found no current official fare, so budget a little more and check at the counter. Go early; mornings are the shortest queues according to Karnataka Tourism.
The cave exhibit and sound-and-light show
An artificial cave beneath the statue tells the story of Ravana and the Atmalinga through sculpture and a light-and-sound sequence. An older listing gave tickets as ₹10 for adults and ₹5 for children; treat that as a floor. Near the statue there is also a large Krishna and Arjuna chariot sculpture.
Murudeshwar Beach and the fort
The beach is about half a kilometre from the temple and works for a walk and sunset. Speedboats for four to six people and water scooters run from here; an older source listed a two-person scooter ride at ₹300. Behind the temple is a fort said to have been renovated by Tipu Sultan. Do not swim in rough water or against local advice.
Kanduka Hill
The hill the temple stands on is also where the Atmalinga fragment is said to have landed, and the grounds have mythological sculptures and gardens. Stay into the evening if you can: the complex is lit after the crowds leave.
The legend of the Atmalinga
The temple’s story comes from the Ramayana. Ravana won the Atmalinga from Shiva on the condition that it must never touch the ground before he reached Lanka. Vishnu, worried that Ravana would become immortal, asked Ganesha to intervene. Disguised as a Brahmin boy, Ganesha offered to hold the linga while Ravana performed his evening rites, called out to him three times, and set it down when Ravana did not return. Ravana tried to tear it from the ground, and the pieces and coverings scattered to several sites. The piece that fell at Kanduka Hill gave the town its name, from Mrideshwar. The same story ties Murudeshwar to other temples in Karnataka such as Gokarna.
Netrani Island: diving and snorkelling
| Detail | What sources say |
|---|---|
| Distance | About 10 nautical miles, roughly 19 km, offshore; sources round it to 15 or 20 km |
| Boat ride | About 1.5 hours each way, weather permitting |
| Season | November to May (Karnataka Tourism); December to May is called ideal by a 2020 report. No trips in the monsoon |
| Price (listed) | Scuba about ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 per person; snorkelling about ₹1,500 to ₹2,000 |
| Time | Full-day trip; about 30 to 40 minutes underwater for a dive, about an hour snorkelling |
| Age | PADI sets 10 years as the minimum for diving; operators may set their own age and medical limits |
| Permission | A 2020 report says casual visitors need coastal police permission; registered operators normally arrange it |
| Departure | From Murudeshwar, booked through local operators |
Netrani, also called Pigeon Island or Netra Hill, is a small uninhabited island with a coral reef; divers report reef fish, rays, turtles, eels and occasional sharks. It was once used for naval target practice, and campaigners stopped that. Trips depend on sea conditions, so keep a spare day. Book only through an operator that arranges the permit, boat, gear and briefing, and ask what the price includes. A reasonable question to ask any operator: what happens if the trip is cancelled for weather? Prices are the figures listed by the tourism department and may differ by package.
How to reach Murudeshwar
| From | Mode | Distance and time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | Road via Tumakuru, Shivamogga and Honnavar | About 500 km; 8 to 10 hours by car per one source | An older listing shows buses taking just over 12 hours for ₹600–₹750 |
| Mangaluru | Bus or road | Bus about 4 hours | Mangaluru airport is 134–165 km away, depending on the source |
| Konkan Railway | Murdeshwar station (MRDW) | Two platforms; on the Mangaluru–Mumbai line | Station-to-temple distance is reported inconsistently, so confirm on a map before booking an auto |
| Bhatkal | Road | About 12 to 16 km | Nearest larger town |
| Goa airport | Road | About 220 km | Alternative airport |
For the rail route, the Konkan stretch is considered one of the more scenic ways to arrive; see our scenic train journeys in Karnataka. Check train timetables and stops with Indian Railways before booking, as stops and numbers change.
Best time to visit Murudeshwar
| Months | Conditions | Verdict |

A 1-day and 2-day Murudeshwar plan
One day
Reach by 7 to 8 am. Do darshan first, in appropriate clothing, then take the gopura lift and see the statue and cave before the heat builds. The temple closes in the afternoon, so use the 1 to 3 pm gap for lunch, and then the beach. Come back after 3 pm for the fort and Kanduka Hill, then stay for sunset and the lit complex. One source suggests 2 to 3 hours for the temple, statue and beach alone, and another recommends two days for the town and beach.
Two days
Spend day two on Netrani if the sea is calm and you are travelling between November and May; boats leave in the morning and return the same day. If you would rather not dive, use day two for Bhatkal or move on up the coast to Gokarna’s beaches, or inland to Jog Falls after the monsoon.
Where to eat and stay
Eateries are along the beach and near the temple. Sources name Kamath and Naveen’s Beach Restaurant, built on a pier, for vegetarian meals, and RNS Restaurant near the temple; most places serve both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Stay options range from dormitories and lodges to beachfront hotels, including RNS Residency, a three-star hotel facing the sea near the temple. I did not find reliable current room rates, so compare directly before you book. For wider choices along the coast, see the Udupi guide and the beaches in Karnataka list. Mistakes to avoid
- Arriving in shorts or beachwear. The 2025 dress rule applies to the sacred areas.
- Planning sightseeing between 1 and 3 pm. The temple is closed for darshan; use that gap for lunch.
- Booking Netrani in monsoon or without a spare day. Sea conditions decide the trip.
- Trusting a single fare. The lift and cave prices I found are from older travelogues.
