Distances are approximate, and road works along the highway can change travel times. Keep an eye on the weather in the monsoon.
Stop 1: Mangaluru
Start with a late-morning visit to the Kadri Manjunatha temple, then head to Tannirbhavi or Panambur beach for an easy sunset. Mangaluru is a food city, so try neer dosa with chicken or fish curry, Mangalorean fish thali and kori rotti. The St Aloysius Chapel with its painted interior is a surprise highlight. See our Mangaluru guide for more.
Stop 2: Udupi and Malpe
Udupi is both a temple town and a food destination. The Krishna Matha, with its unique window darshan of the deity, is the centre of the town. Take a short drive to Malpe beach and, if the sea is calm, a boat to St Mary’s Island, known for its dramatic columns of volcanic rock. Kaup (Kapu) beach, with its lighthouse, is a good sunset spot. Our Udupi guide covers the town in more depth.
Stop 3: Maravanthe
Maravanthe is the most scenic part of the route. For several kilometres the highway runs between the Arabian Sea on one side and the Suparnika river on the other, with only a narrow strip of land separating them. Stop at a roadside viewpoint for photographs, and have tea at a roadside shack. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times.
Stop 4: Kollur and Kundapura (optional)
If you have time, take a detour inland to the Mookambika temple in Kollur, set against the forests of the Western Ghats. It is one of the most important temples of Karnataka, and many pilgrims combine it with the coast. Allow at least half a day because the drive is winding.
Stop 5: Murudeshwar
Murudeshwar sits on a cape surrounded on three sides by the sea. A tall, multi-storey temple tower stands next to a very large Shiva statue, both visible from a long way out. You can go up the tower by lift for a view over the coast, and you can walk on the beach. Scuba diving and boat trips to nearby Netrani Island operate in season, subject to local conditions and operator permits.
Stop 6: Honnavar and Kumta
Between Murudeshwar and Gokarna, the Sharavathi river meets the sea near Honnavar. Kasarkod beach has been recognised for cleanliness and is a good place for a break. Kumta has a fishing town feel and good seafood. This is also where you can turn inland for Jog Falls, about 60 km from Honnavar. Read the Jog Falls guide if you want to add it.
Stop 7: Gokarna
Finish at Gokarna, visit the Mahabaleshwar temple and spend your last day on the beaches. Read the Gokarna beaches guide to plan the coastal trek and choose where to stay. Allow at least one night in town.
A 3-day Mangaluru to Gokarna plan
- Day 1: Mangaluru sightseeing, drive to Udupi, evening at Malpe or Kaup.
- Day 2: Early start for Maravanthe, then Kollur if desired, and an afternoon at Murudeshwar.
- Day 3: Drive via Honnavar to Gokarna, beach time and sunset.
If you only have two days, skip Kollur, drive straight from Udupi to Murudeshwar and reach Gokarna on day two.
Food to try along the coast
- Neer dosa and chicken ghee roast in Mangaluru.
- Fish thali in Malpe or Kundapura.
- Kundapura chicken curry and bun-style dishes.
- Goli baje and filter coffee at Udupi.
- Fresh prawns and crab at small restaurants near Honnavar and Kumta.
For more dishes, see food to try in Karnataka.
Practical tips for the coastal drive
- Check road conditions. Highway widening has caused diversions in some stretches.
- Avoid driving at night. Trucks and poor lighting make the highway tiring.
- Book coast stays early for December and long weekends.
- Respect the sea. Do not swim in unmarked areas or during the monsoon.
- Carry cash. Smaller roadside places may not take cards.
- Fuel up in larger towns such as Udupi, Kundapura and Honnavar.
Best time for the road trip
October to March is ideal. The monsoon months bring very heavy rain and rough seas, although the green countryside can be magical for those who enjoy it. See Karnataka in monsoon and beaches in Karnataka for more.
