By train: Bangalore to Hosapete
Hosapete Junction is the railway station for Hampi and is about 13 km from the main monuments. Overnight services run on the Bengaluru-Hubballi corridor via Tumakuru, Arsikere, Davanagere and Hosapete, and the Hampi Express has long been a popular choice. Because train numbers and timings change, confirm the schedule and book on the official IRCTC website or app, and reserve early for winter weekends.
From the station, take an auto rickshaw or a local bus to Hampi. Buses run from the Hosapete bus stand, and autos typically need a negotiated fare. Arriving early in the morning gives you time for a first walk around the bazaar.
By road: the route from Bangalore to Hampi
The drive uses the national highway north from Bengaluru through Tumakuru, Sira or Chitradurga, Challakere and Hiriyur before reaching Hosapete. The distance is roughly 340 km. The road is mostly four-lane and well maintained, with toll plazas along the way.
- Start early. Leaving by 5 or 6 am avoids Bengaluru’s exit traffic.
- Plan a breakfast stop around Tumakuru or Sira.
- Take a lunch break near Chitradurga, where you can also see the fort if time allows. Our Chitradurga Fort guide has the ticket, timings and a route, and forts in Karnataka compares it with the others.
- Carry FASTag and cash for smaller tolls.
- Avoid night driving on stretches with trucks and limited lighting.
If you hire a cab, ask for an all-inclusive price covering tolls, parking and driver allowance, and confirm that the vehicle can go to Hampi (some local zones have parking rules).
By bus
KSRTC and private operators run daily overnight services from Majestic and other pick-up points in Bengaluru to Hosapete, with some buses continuing to Hampi. Sleeper and semi-sleeper coaches are common. Book through official platforms and check boarding points carefully, because Bengaluru has many pick-up locations. Buses from Hosapete to Hampi run frequently through the day.
By air
The closest scheduled airports are Hubballi (around 140 to 150 km from Hampi) and the small airport near Vidyanagar close to Ballari (around 30 to 40 km). Flight availability from Bengaluru changes often, and onward road transfers add time, so for most travellers the train or road is faster door-to-door. If you do fly, book a pre-arranged cab for the final leg.
