Day 1: Bengaluru arrival
Land in Bengaluru and spend the day easing into the trip. Walk through Lalbagh Botanical Garden in the morning, visit Cubbon Park and the Vidhana Soudha exterior, and spend the evening around MG Road or Church Street. Try a filter coffee and a masala dosa for breakfast the next morning before leaving. The Bengaluru guide lists more stops if you arrive early.
Day 2: Bengaluru to Mysuru via Srirangapatna
Take the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway and leave early. Stop at Srirangapatna to see the Ranganathaswamy temple, the Daria Daulat Bagh summer palace and the Gumbaz mausoleum. If it is the right season, add a visit to Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary. Reach Mysuru by afternoon, see Mysore Palace, and return after sunset on Sundays or festival evenings for the illuminations. Our Mysore Palace guide explains timings and the light show.
Day 3: Mysuru, Chamundi Hills and Somanathapura
Start at Chamundi Hills for the temple and the huge Nandi statue on the way down. Return for the Mysore Zoo, the Devaraja Market and a street food lunch. In the afternoon drive to Somanathapura, about 35 km away, to see the star-shaped Chennakesava temple. It is a compact introduction to Hoysala art before you reach Belur and Halebidu. Read more in the Mysuru guide and the Hoysala temples guide.
Day 4: Mysuru to Coorg
Drive to Kodagu (Coorg) in the morning. On the way, stop at Bylakuppe to see the Namdroling Monastery, also known as the Golden Temple, one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India. Check in at Madikeri, then visit Abbey Falls late in the day. Madikeri’s Raja’s Seat is a perfect place for the sunset. Stay in a homestay or an estate resort to experience Kodava food and coffee plantations. See the Kodagu guide for more options.
Day 5: a slow day in Coorg
Spend the morning at Dubare elephant camp on the Cauvery, which allows visitors to watch the elephants being bathed and fed. In the afternoon take a coffee plantation walk, taste fresh pepper and cardamom and try pandi curry if you eat meat, or akki rotti for a vegetarian local lunch. If you have extra energy, visit Talakaveri and the Bhagamandala confluence. Keep the evening free.
Day 6: Coorg to Belur, Halebidu and Chikkamagaluru
This is the longest driving day, so start early. The road via Somwarpet and Sakleshpur takes you toward Belur, where the Chennakeshava temple is a living shrine with exquisitely carved pillars. Continue to Halebidu for the Hoysaleswara temple, then drive to Chikkamagaluru by evening. Check in, rest and enjoy dinner at your homestay. Read the Hassan guide and the Chikkamagaluru guide for stops.
Day 7: Mullayanagiri and return
Reach Mullayanagiri early for sunrise views. At about 1,930 m, it is the highest peak in Karnataka, and the final stretch involves a stepped climb. Return for breakfast, visit a coffee estate if time allows, and begin the drive to Bengaluru, which takes roughly five to six hours. Keep your flight or train booking for the evening or the next day.
Budget and booking tips
- Hire a driver for the ghat sections. Coorg and Chikkamagaluru roads are narrow and winding.
- Book homestays in advance. Good ones fill up on weekends.
- Carry cash. Rural areas have limited card acceptance.
- Take light warm clothes. Evenings in the hills are cool from November to January.
- Plan flexible days. A single landslide or bad weather day should not break the schedule.
How to adapt this itinerary
If you have only five days, use the 5-day Karnataka itinerary. If you prefer heritage, swap Coorg for Hampi and Badami. If you prefer beaches, replace Chikkamagaluru with the coastal road trip. Check weather conditions in the best time to visit Karnataka guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is 7 days enough for Karnataka?
Yes, if you focus on one region. Seven days comfortably covers Mysuru, Coorg and Chikkamagaluru without long daily drives.
What is the best route for a Karnataka 7-day trip?
The loop in this guide is the most practical: Bengaluru, Mysuru, Coorg, Belur-Halebidu, Chikkamagaluru, Bengaluru.
Do I need a car for this itinerary?
A car with a driver is the easiest option. Public transport works between cities, but reaching estates, viewpoints and temples is much simpler by car.
When should I start the trip?
Between October and February for good weather. In October, check Dasara dates because Mysuru gets very busy.
Can I add Hampi to this trip?
Hampi is far from this loop. Treat it as a separate trip, as explained in the Hampi 2-day itinerary.
