Best Time to Visit Karnataka: Month-by-Month Weather and Travel Guide

The best time to visit Karnataka depends on where you are going. The coast, the Malnad hills, the old Mysore region and the dry north behave like four different climates. Use this month-by-month guide to match the season to your trip.

Quick answer: October to February is the best time to visit Karnataka for most places, with cool, dry weather and clear views. Visit Jog Falls and the Western Ghats from August to December, wildlife parks from November to May, and avoid inland north Karnataka in April and May, when temperatures can climb above 40°C.

Karnataka seasons at a glance

Karnataka has three main seasons. Winter (November to February) is mild and pleasant everywhere. Summer (March to May) is hot in the plateau districts and humid on the coast. The southwest monsoon (June to September) brings heavy rain to the coast and the Western Ghats, while the interior gets far less. The state also gets some northeast monsoon rain in October and November, mainly in the south.

Season Months What to expect Best for
Winter Nov to Feb Cool mornings, clear skies, comfortable days Hampi, Badami, Mysuru, Gokarna, treks
Summer Mar to May Hot and dry inland, humid on the coast Hill stations, Coorg, Chikkamagaluru, safaris
Monsoon Jun to Sep Heavy rain on the coast and ghats, green landscapes Jog Falls, Agumbe, Sakleshpur, Coorg
Post-monsoon Oct Humid days, fresh greenery, festivals Mysuru Dasara, waterfalls, Western Ghats

January: clear skies and festivals

January is one of the best months to be anywhere in Karnataka. Days are bright and mornings are cool, particularly in Bengaluru, Mysuru and the hills. The Republic Day flower show at Lalbagh in Bengaluru is a regular highlight, and Makara Sankranti brings harvest festivities. Hampi, Badami and the north are at their most comfortable, and Gokarna and the coast are dry and busy.

February: the last perfect month

February stays pleasant, with warmer afternoons arriving by the end of the month. It is an excellent time for Hampi, Pattadakal, Hoysala temples and the coast. Wildlife viewing improves as water sources dry up. Book Coorg and Chikkamagaluru early if your dates include a weekend.

March and April: coffee blossom and rising heat

March and April are hot inland but magical in coffee country. After the first pre-monsoon showers, coffee plants in Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru flower, and the estates smell of jasmine. Ugadi, the Kannada new year, usually falls in March or April. Avoid Hampi, Kalaburagi, Raichur and Vijayapura at midday, and explore early in the morning instead.

May: for hills and safaris

May is very hot in the interior, but the hills of Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Sakleshpur are cooler. Bandipur, Nagarhole and Kabini are good in May because animals gather near water. Pre-monsoon storms can arrive late in the month, so carry a light rain jacket.

June and July: the monsoon arrives

The southwest monsoon reaches Karnataka in early June. The coast and the Ghats get very heavy rain, and sea conditions are rough, so beach activities and boat rides are often restricted. Landslides and fallen trees can disrupt ghat roads, so check conditions before driving. This is the quietest and cheapest season for Coorg, Agumbe and Sakleshpur. See Karnataka in monsoon for itineraries.

August and September: waterfalls at full strength

The falls peak in August and September. Jog Falls, Shivanasamudra, Abbey Falls and Magod Falls are at their fullest, and everything is green. Read the Jog Falls guide and the waterfalls in Karnataka list. Heavy rain can close viewpoints, so travel with flexible plans.

October and November: Dasara and the start of high season

October is festival season. Mysuru Dasara, the state festival, usually falls in September or October. See the Mysore Dasara 2026 guide. By November the rain has eased, rivers still run full, the Hampi Utsav is typically held around this time, and the tourist season begins. Kambala buffalo races on the coast generally run from November to March.

December: peak season on the coast

December brings cool weather, clear skies and crowds. Gokarna, Murudeshwar and Udupi are busy, and prices rise around Christmas and New Year. Chikkamagaluru and Coorg are very pleasant, though mornings can be chilly. Book at least a month ahead.

Best time to visit by destination

Destination Best months Avoid
Hampi Oct to Feb Apr to May (extreme heat)
Mysuru Sep to Mar None serious; busy at Dasara
Coorg Oct to Mar (or Jun to Sep for rain lovers) Peak holiday weekends
Chikkamagaluru Sep to Mar Heavy rain days in Jul
Gokarna Oct to Mar Jun to Aug (sea closed to swimming)
Jog Falls Aug to Dec Apr to May (nearly dry)
Kabini and Bandipur Nov to May Heavy monsoon
Badami and Pattadakal Oct to Feb Apr to May
Bengaluru Oct to Mar Peak traffic during rain

Planning tips for every season

  • Check rain alerts before ghat drives. Roads around Agumbe, Charmadi and Sampaje can face disruptions in July and August.
  • Book coast stays in advance during December. Weekends and the Christmas period fill quickly.
  • Pack for contrast. A hot afternoon in Hampi can be followed by a cold morning in Chikkamagaluru.
  • Use early starts for inland sightseeing. Temples and forts are most comfortable before 10 am.
  • Carry water and sun protection from March to May.
